16. Airborne ISR Best Practice Experience through Practice
Use Case ISR
• Challenges
– Small Airframes
– High data rate requirement – aircraft are data producers, not data
consumers
– Small amount of rack space and weight available to accommodate
electronics and antenna (SWAP extremely limited)
– Rapid deployment timeline compressed amount of time available for
development, integration, and testing
– Certification requirements
• Certification for testing in the Continental US
• Certification for operational use

17. Airborne ISR Best Practice Experience through Practice
Use Case ISR
• Functional Requirements
– System must be able to support data rates of at least 10 Mbps from the aircraft
to the ground via satellite
– Multiple aircraft must be able to be supported simultaneously
– System must be able to support data rates of at least 2 Mbps from the ground
back to the aircraft
– All data interfaces must be compatible with Internet Protocol
– All Intermediate Frequency (IF) interfaces must be commercial L-Band
– External hardware (antenna, radome) must be able to be fitted on multiple
types of aircraft
– Operator interface must be simple enough to be operated by personnel who are
not satellite experts

18. Airborne ISR Best Practice Experience through Practice
Use Case ISR
• Demonstrated Performance & Results
– During testing and operation, the system has been successfully operated on the
following spacecraft
• Skynet 5A
• Skynet 5C
• Skynet 4E
• XTAR-EUR
• XTAR-LANT
– Data rates from the aircraft to the ground terminal in excess of 10 Mbps have been
demonstrated on each satellite
– Data rates from the ground terminal to the aircraft have been demonstrated on each
satellite
– Use of Adaptive Coding & Modulation (ACM) on Newtec EL470 modems provides,
on average a 30-50% increase in usable data rate by converting extra link margin to
usable data rate
– The system is currently operational, supporting multiple aircraft
