Newmarket
River Cruises
Welcome to our latest brochure of cruises aboard
warm and welcoming MS Olympia, covering voyages on
Europe’s most beautiful rivers, including the mighty Rhine,
the meandering Moselle and – by popular demand in 2013 –
the glorious ‘Blue’ Danube. With some wonderful festive cruises
to Germany’s famous Christmas Markets, and springtime sailings
to the colourful Dutch waterways and incomparable bulbfields, this is a
marvellous collection that is sure to prove popular with regular customers
and those joining Olympia for the first time.
2013 will be the 5th year that Newmarket has been associated with Olympia, and the feedback from
our passengers about the ship’s friendly crew and on-board Cruise Managers gets better and better! We
challenge you to find the same levels of friendly service, good food, evening entertainment, relaxing home
comforts and enthralling itineraries at such great value anywhere else.
Part of Olympia’s charm is the fact she carries less than 100 passengers each sailing, which means our most
popular itineraries sell out quickly every year. Book now to secure your cabin selection on the cruise of your
choice today!
We look forward to the pleasure of your company!

The Warmest
of Welcomes!
The minute you step aboard Olympia, you
know that here is a ship that will do everything
possible during your time aboard to ensure
your holiday enjoyment. Carrying less than 100
passengers each sailing, Olympia is an intimate
vessel with a Captain and crew who go out of
their way to get to know their guests, and to
make sure that they have a memorable time.
This being an exclusive Newmarket Holidays’
charter, our on-board Cruise Manager adds
to the sense that you are being extremely well
looked after.
There really are few holidays more relaxing and enjoyable than those
spent lazily drifting through some of Europe’s most enticing scenery
on board a river cruise vessel – and by choosing to join us on board
MS Olympia, you can look forward to a truly very special time – and at
superb, value-for-money prices too!
When not gazing out at the ever-changing vista through the panoramic windows of the ship’s
comfortable lounge, or from the topsides observation deck, or enjoying the on-board hospitality
and amenities, you might be stepping ashore to explore some new, enchanting and enthralling
destinations, before moving gently on. With fine food and good company to look forward to each
day, entertainment each evening and a comfortable bed awaiting you in your cabin each night, this
is holiday heaven.
Life on Board MS Olympia
“I’m looking forward to welcoming you
aboard Newmarket’s excellent cruise
programme for 2013. I never get tired of
the stunning scenery, picturesque villages
and fairytale castles we pass as we sail to
our next destination.
I’m delighted to take Olympia back to
the Danube in 2013. We’ll call at some
of Central Europe’s most beautiful cities
including Vienna and Budapest – what
better way can there be to discover these
“must-see” destinations?
As always my crew and I will do
everything we can to make sure your
time on board is an enjoyable one.
I’m sure we’ll recognise many familiar
faces, and we look forward to meeting
new passengers on board our very
friendly ship!”

Olympia’s 49 cabins are arranged on
two decks and offer excellent twin-bedded
accommodation (the beds convert into
sofas for daytime use) with private shower
and WC, table, a chair and small wardrobe.
Large picture windows offer views of the ever-
changing scenery as it passes by. Your steward
will ensure that your cabin is tidied and prepared
for you each evening.
Cabin prices vary according to their deck and
location on board MS Olympia. You’ll find a
Deck Plan on Page 33 of the brochure.
Service with a Smile
MS Olympia’s friendly crew go out of their way
to ensure that you enjoy every minute of your
time on board, and whether it’s your cabin
steward, bar or waiting staff or the Captain and
navigation crew, you’ll be greeted by smiling
faces wherever you look. On each of the cruises,
the Captain will host
a Welcome Cocktail
Party, where you
can meet the
crew and your
fellow passengers
in an informal
atmosphere, and on
the longer duration
cruises, you’ll enjoy
a relaxed Captain’s
Farewell Dinner –
always a special
occasion.
Our On-board
Cruise Managers
In addition to Olympia’s Captain and crew, you
will be looked after by Newmarket’s on-board
Cruise Manager, who will be one of our hand-
picked, friendly professionals. There to ensure
that everything runs as smoothly as possible
during your time on board, our Cruise Manager
will also accompany the shore excursions,
bringing to life the
fascinating places
visited, and will be on
hand to ‘point you
in the right direction’
when Olympia ties up
in a new port of call.

Spotlight on MS Olympia
• MS Olympia is registered in Switzerland,
where the Rhine rises in the high Alps. She
flies the Swiss flag
• She has sailed all Europe’s great rivers,
including the Rhine, the Moselle, the Main, the
Danube, the Po and the Dutch waterways
• Her shallow draft means that she can navigate
even at low water
• With just 96 passengers on board, Olympia’s
friendly crew really can get to know everyone
• English is the on-board language and the
Euro the on-board currency during your cruise
The Lounge Bar
Much of the day, when you’re on board
ship, might be spent relaxing in a seat in the
comfortable lounge, enjoying the passing
scenery, curled up with a good book, chatting
to fellow passengers or even joining in a
friendly game of cards – a river cruise holiday
doesn’t have to be all about sightseeing or
shopping! Enjoy a mid-morning coffee or
afternoon tea, or a drink from the adjacent
bar – before heading downstairs to the
dining room.
In the evenings, the lounge and bar put on a
different cloak, as the on-board pianist and
the ship’s crew put on some light-hearted
entertainment and there’s even the opportunity
on occasions to take to the
dance floor.
Top Deck Views
On fine days there’s nowhere better to take
in the passing scenery as Olympia glides
on her way than from the ship’s Top Deck,
which serves as an observation platform for
keen sightseers and perfect hideaway for
sun-worshippers and lovers of the open-air.
Equipped with sun-loungers and outdoor
chairs, the Top Deck offers the very best of life
on the river.

Life on Board –
your Olympia day
From beginning to end of each wonderful day
on board MS Olympia, you’ll enjoy a memorable
holiday experience.
Whether you awaken as the ship continues on
her gentle way, or to greet a new port of call,
you’ll leave your cabin to enjoy a full breakfast in
the dining room, or to take the air on top deck.
The day’s programme will be organised by
our on-board Cruise Manager, and it might be
time to step ashore to enjoy an included or
optional excursion.

The Olympia
Dining Experience
One of the undoubted highlights of your
Olympia river cruise holiday will be the full-board
dining arrangement in the ship’s delightful lower-
deck restaurant. Crisp linen tablecloths, attentive
waiting staff and sumptuous fare – a mix of
regional specialities, international dishes and
meals tailored to British palates, all prepared
by the on-board chefs – served in comfortable,
relaxed surroundings add up to a wonderful
experience three times each day.
A well-stocked breakfast buffet, including hot
dishes, sets you up for the day ahead, while
lunch generally includes a salad buffet and lighter
main dish. In the evening, when the atmosphere
is generally more ‘smart casual’ than ‘formal’
– although gentlemen may like to don a jacket
for the special Captain’s Welcome and Farewell
nights (available on longer duration cruises only)
– a delicious four-course meal is served.
As Olympia sails through regions famed for
their love of good food, expect to taste some
local dishes, and don’t miss the opportunity
to sample the wines for which the Rhine and
Moselle are celebrated. In Cologne, it’s the local
Kölsch beer that takes pride of place, while in
Rüdesheim, another regular port of call, you
might try the local Asbach brandy.

Day One ~ Embark in Cologne
Travel out today, by coach, air or rail, to
the great Rhineland capital Cologne, where

mighty Gothic cathedral, or Dom.
Enjoy a first meal on board, and – time-

houses selling Kölsch, the ubiquitous local
beer), which buzz with locals and visitors
alike.
Olympia sails overnight, slipping away from
Cologne to begin her journey up-river.
Day Two ~ Cochem
Awake as Olympia makes her way into the
meanders of the River Moselle, its twists and
turns taking it beneath hillsides overflowing
with vines and topped by historic castles.
Pretty villages dot the banks, each more
beautiful than the last.
By early afternoon, Olympia will have arrived
in the prettiest town of all, half-timbered
Cochem, nestled beneath the fairytale
turrets of the Reichsburg castle, which can
be explored on this afternoon’s optional

This evening, before dinner on board, take
a stroll through Cochem’s delightful streets,
and enjoy an optional wine-tasting in one of
this famous wine-town’s many weinstüben.

An unforgettable day awaits, as early this

year-round holiday haven, with its narrow
streets – the most celebrated of which,
the Drosselgasse, is lined with bars and
weinstüben.

quirky wonders of Siegfried’s Musikkabinett,
and this evening, enjoy the highlight of
the cruise, as you watch a procession of

join Olympia in the ancient Rhine town of
Andernach. After a first evening meal, enjoy a
nightcap in the ship’s bar, or simply retire to
your comfortable cabin.
Day Two ~ Cochem
Olympia sails early this morning from
Andernach, heading upstream into the
Middle Rhine to Koblenz and the mighty
Ehrenbreitstein castle, then into the scenic
twists and turns of the River Moselle, arriving
by lunchtime in pretty half-timbered Cochem,
nestled beneath fairy-tale Reichsburg Castle.
Step ashore to discover this famous wine-
making village, and join this afternoon’s
optional excursion, journeying by coach
along the Mosel Weinstrasse’s scenic route.
Olympia moors overnight in Cochem.
Day Three ~ Boppard
Enjoy a scenic cruise back to Koblenz, before
arriving later this afternoon in the picture-
book wine town of Boppard, the ‘Pearl of
the Rhine’. Join our Tour Manager for an
included walking tour. An historical treasure
chest and major wine-producing centre, the

to take in the charms of Boppard by night.
Day Four ~ Rhine Gorge and Rüdesheim

heading through the narrow gorge beneath
the fabled Lorelei, the legendary rock where
sirens were said to have lured sailors to their
fates.
This afternoon, Olympia ties up in
Rüdesheim, the most celebrated of the
Rhineland wine towns. Step ashore to
explore this delightful, year-round holiday
haven, with its narrow streets – the most
celebrated of which, the Drosselgasse,
is lined with bars and weinstuben. Join
our optional excursion to see the quirky
wonders of Siegfried’s Musikal Kabinett.
Day Five ~ Mannheim and Mainz
Having sailed south during the night,
Olympia arrives early this morning in
stylish Mannheim, at the confluence of
the Rhine and the River Neckar. Join the
optional excursion to beautiful Heidelberg,
the ‘Student Prince’ city set beneath an
imposing castle – one of Germany’s ‘must-
see’ destinations. You’ll return to Olympia
in time to sail on to the great city of Mainz,
capital of the Rhineland-Palatinate and
famous as the hometown of Johannes
Gutenburg, the father of the printing press.
Enjoy dinner on board, and step ashore to
explore.
Day Six ~ Cruise to Frankfurt
Enjoy an included walking tour of Mainz, a
formerly hugely powerful city, with its six-
towered cathedral, Gutenberg Museum
and delightful Altstadt of half-timbered
houses, before returning to Olympia for
this afternoon’s sailing into the River Main,
passing through an exquisite vineyard-clad
landscape, and heading east towards the
contrast of the soaring ‘Mainhattan’ skyline
of Frankfurt, where you’ll arrive after dinner
this evening.
Day Seven ~ Frankfurt
An optional guided tour this morning will
bring to life Germany’s fifth-largest city.
North of the river is the historic Altstadt,
centred on the rebuilt central square,
the Römerberg, and surrounded by the
remnants of ancient fortifications. Close
by, the towering façade of the Kaiserdom
church dominates the eastern end of the
Altstadt, dwarfed in turn by the sky-piercing
buildings of the Financial District to the
west. South of the river, the delightful lanes
of Sachsenhausen are home to countless
cafés and bars served traditional Ebbelwoi
or Apfelwein cider.
The rest of the day is free – perhaps to
visit one of the city’s many outstanding
museums, to take a ride up the vertiginous
Maintower for the stunning views, or to rest
and relax on board Olympia. This evening,
the Captain hosts a Farewell Dinner, with
chance to swap memories of the past
wonderful few days with fellow passengers.
Day Eight ~ Disembark in Frankfurt
Bid “Auf wiedersehen” to Olympia and her
crew this morning, and begin your return
journey back to the UK.
Please Note: The 4th 5th October cruises
operate a reverse itinerary sailing from Frankfurt
to Andernach. All included calls and highlights
remain the same although the days will change.
On these dates Olympia will overnight in Alken on

sails once again this evening, as you enjoy
dinner and the evening’s entertainment.
Day Three ~ Würzburg
This morning finds Olympia moored in
glorious Würzburg, nestled beneath steep,

Continuing her passage along the

between the North Sea and the Black
Sea, Olympia arrives early this morning in
Nuremberg, its rebuilt half-timbered houses
and narrow lanes seemingly unchanged
in centuries. Join our optional tour,

Sebalduskirche and the imposing fortress of
the Kaiserburg and the central Hauptmarkt,
the main square. This evening Olympia
continues her transit of the canal.
Day Six ~ Kelheim and Regensburg
Olympia enters the Danube at Kelheim, at
a point where the river is overlooked by
high cliffs, atop one of which sits ‘Mad’
King Ludwig’s spectacular Befreiungshalle
monument, built to commemorate German
victories in the Napoleonic wars. In another
narrow gorge the Weltenburg monastery
sits perched between the river and cliff-top,
site of a near-thousand-year-old brewery.
Disembark in Kelheim this morning to visit
the Abbey, or stay on board for the cruise
to majestic Regensburg, one of Central

cities. Enjoy an included walking tour this
afternoon, discovering the city’s bustling
Altstadt and some of its thousand or so
historic monuments, before re-boarding
Olympia for her last evening cruise.

  • 6. The Lounge Bar Much of the day, when you’re on board ship, might be spent relaxing in a seat in the comfortable lounge, enjoying the passing scenery, curled up with a good book, chatting to fellow passengers or even joining in a friendly game of cards – a river cruise holiday doesn’t have to be all about sightseeing or shopping! Enjoy a mid-morning coffee or afternoon tea, or a drink from the adjacent bar – before heading downstairs to the dining room. In the evenings, the lounge and bar put on a different cloak, as the on-board pianist and the ship’s crew put on some light-hearted entertainment and there’s even the opportunity on occasions to take to the dance floor. Top Deck Views On fine days there’s nowhere better to take in the passing scenery as Olympia glides on her way than from the ship’s Top Deck, which serves as an observation platform for keen sightseers and perfect hideaway for sun-worshippers and lovers of the open-air. Equipped with sun-loungers and outdoor chairs, the Top Deck offers the very best of life on the river. 6 Life on Board – your Olympia day From beginning to end of each wonderful day on board MS Olympia, you’ll enjoy a memorable holiday experience. Whether you awaken as the ship continues on her gentle way, or to greet a new port of call, you’ll leave your cabin to enjoy a full breakfast in the dining room, or to take the air on top deck. The day’s programme will be organised by our on-board Cruise Manager, and it might be time to step ashore to enjoy an included or optional excursion. 6 LIFEONBOARD To book please see your Local Travel Agent “The Cruise Manager was excellent, as were the staff in the restaurant. ”Mrs H, Hampshire
  • 7. The Olympia Dining Experience One of the undoubted highlights of your Olympia river cruise holiday will be the full-board dining arrangement in the ship’s delightful lower- deck restaurant. Crisp linen tablecloths, attentive waiting staff and sumptuous fare – a mix of regional specialities, international dishes and meals tailored to British palates, all prepared by the on-board chefs – served in comfortable, relaxed surroundings add up to a wonderful experience three times each day. A well-stocked breakfast buffet, including hot dishes, sets you up for the day ahead, while lunch generally includes a salad buffet and lighter main dish. In the evening, when the atmosphere is generally more ‘smart casual’ than ‘formal’ – although gentlemen may like to don a jacket for the special Captain’s Welcome and Farewell nights (available on longer duration cruises only) – a delicious four-course meal is served. As Olympia sails through regions famed for their love of good food, expect to taste some local dishes, and don’t miss the opportunity to sample the wines for which the Rhine and Moselle are celebrated. In Cologne, it’s the local Kölsch beer that takes pride of place, while in Rüdesheim, another regular port of call, you might try the local Asbach brandy. Sample Daily Menu Breakfast Buffet A choice of cereals fresh fruit salad Freshly prepared continental breakfast including croissants pastries Hot cooked breakfast A selection of fruit juices, tea coffee Three-course Lunch Salad buffet with a choice of dressings and condiments Soup of the day Roast chicken with rosemary, pilau rice and mixed vegetables or French vegetable stew with potatoes or Spaghetti Carbonara Chocolate pudding with pears and whipped cream Choice of coffee or tea Four-course Dinner Smoked salmon roulade with salad and a mustard and dill dressing Tomato consommé with dumplings Tortellini stuffed with forest mushrooms and a parsley sauce or Roasted pork tenderloin with a cognac peppersauce served with gratin potatoes and vegetable bouquet or Crispy vegetable roast with sour cream Baked Alaska Choice of coffee or tea 7 LIFEONBOARD Call us on 0843 316 1199 – We’re here to help! “Excellent cuisine, entertainment, friendly and helpful crew. ”Mrs H, Manchester

Our optional guided tour of the ‘Pearl of the Danube’ will be the best introduction to this marvellous city. The most striking monuments are found on the left, Buda, bank of the river, including romantic, colourful Castle Hill, a maze of winding streets that is home to the former Royal Palace and to important museums. Day Seven ~ Bratislava The Slovakian capital, which uniquely also borders Hungary and Austria, is a medieval gem, discovered this morning on an optional walking tour, which will include the Gothic St Martin’s Cathedral, some splendid Baroque palaces and the city’s ancient suspension bridge. This afternoon Olympia continues upstream, cruising back into Austria.
