Cry, the Beloved Country Research and Multi-Media Presentation
Fall 2009
The Objectives:
Interpret and analyze the meaning of literary works from diverse cultures and authors by
applying different critical lenses and analytic techniques.
Relate recognized works and authors of American and World literature to major literary
movements, themes, and issues of their eras.
Analyze the literal and interpretive meanings of literary works using a variety of critical
approaches.
Enhance critical analyses and comprehension of texts by employing research
methodology from primary and secondary sources.
The students will demonstrate the ability to compose in a variety of modes by developing
content, employing specific forms, and selecting language appropriate for a particular
audience.
Develop key ideas in support of a thesis using ample, specific, concrete evidence.
The Opportunity:
You and your partner(s) are going to read and study Alan Paton’s Cry, the Beloved
Country. The text is essentially a social protest that deals with the rise of Apartheid in
Africa. As you read the text, you are to choose another social or political protest to
research and study. You must find and read relevant literature (non-fiction) that came
about as a result of the movement. For example, Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream”
speech was a direct result of the Civil Rights Movement. You must choose at least one
piece that opposes the movement and one piece that supports the movement. The pieces
of literature you choose to read must be approved by me, and they should total no less
than 50 pages. Your goal in this endeavor is to connect the social protest of Cry, the
Beloved Country to the social protest of your choice.
Once your protest and non-fiction pieces are chosen, you will begin to compile the pieces
for your multi-media presentation. You must find factual information from approved
websites, photographs, videos, and audio (music or speeches) relevant to your subject.
As you find these resources, you should begin compiling a works cited page that strictly
adheres to the MLA Format.
You then are going to begin compiling a Google Earth presentation. We will begin the
journey at Brunswick High School. You will then transport us to Africa. You will
2. include relevant facts and details from Cry, the Beloved Country and the Apartheid
movement. Then you will take us to the location of the social protest you chose. You
will embed the resources you compiled into the Google Earth Presentation. The total
time of your presentation will be between 20-30 minutes.
