This document provides information about upcoming exhibitions and events at the New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham, Surrey. In October, there will be exhibitions of the works of artists Alex Dewart and Ursula Leach, and ceramic artist Jane Muir. Additionally, the Surrey Artist of the Year exhibition will run from October 5th to November 17th, showcasing works voted on by the public. Family workshops will also be offered on select Saturdays in September and October.

2. John Maltby is recognised as one of
the country’s finest ceramic artists,
his figures and creatures holding a
wit and profundity that reflect the
human condition and are
inextricably linked to the English
landscape and experience.
‘My work continues to draw its
inspiration from the ‘Englishness’ of
my experience. Although many of the
subjects re-appear, I place them both
in a traditional continuum, yet relevant
to my contemporary condition.’
Peter Jackman’s works interpret
landscapes and objects within the
landscape in a semi-abstract form.
His images portray a personal
reaction to a place, in addition to
elements of the actual scene. Peter’s
work is created by layers of drawing
and with graphite, pastels and chalk.
These layers are cut through by
scratching, scraping and overdrawing
to create a complex surface.

3. Alex Dewart questions the role of representation in painting, taking
inspiration from Christian icon painting, replacing religious figures
with a broader set of contemporary ‘icons’ as well as more general
historical figures. Her landscape work uses structures such as bridges
which have more symbolic values attached to them.
Ursula Leach makes paintings, prints and drawings in response to the
chalk landscape of Cranborne Chase. The work is, to some extent,
about current agricultural practices, but firstly is about the formal
issues of image making. Colour is important as an expression of mood
and atmosphere and as an indicator of new and different crops.
As climate change takes effect there are dramatic and beautiful
changes of colour in the fields.

4. JaneMuir
Maker in Focus:
Jane Muir
5 Oct – 16 Nov
Jane Muir specialises in idiosyncratic hand
painted figures representing a witty and
uncluttered observation of the world. Figures
that stand alone or placed in an architectural
landscape are hand modelled, allowing her
the freedom to sketch with clay and develop
ideas during the making process. Jane’s figures
are not about specific individuals but are a
personification of the stereotype or archetypal
character. Her work has been exhibited widely
throughout the UK, Europe, America and Japan.

Clare Willard’s work has evolved through an eclectic background covering
anthropology, textiles, public art and print. The binding force is an indomitable
passion for colour and pattern. She makes hand constructed, one off and
limited edition pieces, assembled with a palette of coloured laminate and
wood. Work is tailored to the small and intimate, or scaled up to produce striking
architectural installations. A constantly evolving visual language transforms the
materials into an unusual and eloquent vehicle for colour and line.

The prize is in its fifth year and
celebrates the partnership between
the New Ashgate Gallery and the
Surrey Artists Open Studios.
Each year the exhibition showcases a variety
of artwork created in the region. Votes were
counted from the Surrey Artists Open Studios
summer event and the artists with the most
votes have been invited to showcase their
work as a part of the exhibition.
The public are asked to vote again during
the show to choose their three favourite
artists. The winning artist will be announced
on 25 October and awarded a solo exhibition
and a cash prize.
The Surrey Artist of the Year is supported by
the Patricia Baines Trust.

By road: Farnham is 11 miles south-
west of Guildford, Surrey, and is clearly
signposted from the A3, A31, M3
and A287. There is a pay and display
car park in front of the Gallery.
The adjacent car park has four
dedicated disabled parking spaces.
By rail: The Farnham Station is served
by London Waterloo. The Gallery is a
five-minute walk from the station.
By bus & coach: Buses run from
Farnham to surrounding towns and
