2. General information
• It is a form of fusion that occurs after the root
and other major parts involved in the teeth
are formed or when the roots of two or more
teeth are united by cementum, below the
cemento enamel junction.
3. Aetiology
• Developmental – space restriction during
development resulting in extend of cementum
of the position between closely approximated
roots of teeth
• Inflammatory – in cases of inflammatory
damage to the roots of teeth are repaired by
cementum
• Traumatic injury – this may also lead to
concrescence of teeth
4. Types
• True concrescence – if the roots are bound
during development
• Acquired concrescence – if the condition
occurs after development
5. Clinical features
• Common in maxillary second and third molar
area
• Primary or secondary teeth are affected
• Usually are involved only two teeth
• roots are fused by cementum
• There may be malocclusion or the teeth may
be impacted
6. Radiographic features
• Diagnosis is made by radiographs. It is not
always possible to distinguish between
concrescence, teeth in close contact and
superimposed teeth
7. Diagnosis
• It is difficult to differentiate between fusion
and concrescence
• Radiograph will show union of two teeth with
the help of cementum
