FUNDRAISING EXCESS
There has been some debate about what is happening with any excess money
that has been raised but is not actually required for the expedition.

Given that money has been raised by a variety of people, both team members
and their families and also from the wider community, but not equally between
team members, there will NOT be a rebate given to individuals.

Unfortunately the flights have worked out more expensive than we had hoped,
£840 pp.
The fee paid to Adventure Alternative is a set figure and will not change. £1560

The additional £440 that each individual has paid will go towards the cost of
their flights.

Insurance also covered at £70 pp under 35 yrs and £90 pp over 35yrs.

Visa paid on arrival into Nepal at approx £50 pp.
We will have some expenditure in Kathmandu for sight seeing
activities that the entire group will do, therefore we will require some
money with us to cover those costs - approx £100 pp.

Minibus hire for UK airport transfers - £600 approx

Therefore the minimum extra money required will be £620 pp plus
£600 - total of £12,380 for all 19 youngsters.
The leaders have paid the entire amount themselves, and not
benefited from any group fundraising.

Therefore, it is very unlikely that there will be much, if any, excess
money raised. We will take the additional money with us to Nepal to
be spent on your youngsters - sightseeing, celebration meal etc. If any
money remains at the end of the trip it will be donated to Moving
Mountains for a project within the village where we have been based.
COMMUNICATIONS AND
  EMERGENCY CONTACT
UK mobile phones - very unreliable, generally don’t work in Nepal
- Therefore we would prefer the Explorers do not take their
personal mobiles with them. Can detract from the experience if
constantly contacting home, or getting upset if unable to contact
home.
The leaders will each have a mobile with Nepalese sim cards,
which we will use for emergency contact with home as well as
communication between groups during the project and hike.
Leaders will make daily contact with a home contact in UK, by
text, email or phone call.
Parents will ONLY be able to contact the team in Nepal through
the home contact.
It may take a day or more for any message to get through, and in the
event that a child needs to return home urgently, be aware that it may
take several days for us to get the child back to Kathmandu and on to a
flight back to the UK. We will be a minimum or two days walk from
nearest airport, and further than this during the trek.
We would like to set up a website that we can update every couple of
days when we get access to the internet so that family and friends at
home can stay up to date with what we are up to. Hopefully we will be
able to email home updates and photos which can be uploaded to the
website regularly.
The Explorers will have intermittent access to the internet themselves,
although this is likely to be minimal as time constraints will not allow a
group of 26 people to all try to access emails on a limited number of
computers with an incredibly slow connection! Hence the group website,
where we can do one update when we are able to which you will all be
able to access at home.
ELECTRICITY

Although most of the lodges and the village where we will be staying
during the project do have electricity, it is not as reliable as at home.
Therefore, keep personal electrical items to a minimum.

Cameras - Disposable batteries or solar charging or spare battery
might be useful.

Books rather than Kindles (We can then all swap during the trip too!)
No mobiles, laptops, ipads etc.

Group video camera??
May be unable to charge iPods etc at times. (Books, playing cards,
board games might be better entertainment!)
ACCEPTABLE CLOTHING!

Nepal is a country with cultures and customs very different
from ours and it is really important that we respect these
so that we do not cause offence to the local people who
will be welcoming us into their communities.
It is not acceptable for people to wear revealing clothing of
any description - Male or Female!
Shoulders and knees must be covered at all times.
Don’t bring your best glad rags as likely to get ruined whilst
doing project or during the washing process!
NEPAL PREPARATION

  • 17. Grand Total - £12,833
  • 18. FUNDRAISING EXCESS There has been some debate about what is happening with any excess money that has been raised but is not actually required for the expedition. Given that money has been raised by a variety of people, both team members and their families and also from the wider community, but not equally between team members, there will NOT be a rebate given to individuals. Unfortunately the flights have worked out more expensive than we had hoped, £840 pp. The fee paid to Adventure Alternative is a set figure and will not change. £1560 The additional £440 that each individual has paid will go towards the cost of their flights. Insurance also covered at £70 pp under 35 yrs and £90 pp over 35yrs. Visa paid on arrival into Nepal at approx £50 pp.
  • 19. We will have some expenditure in Kathmandu for sight seeing activities that the entire group will do, therefore we will require some money with us to cover those costs - approx £100 pp. Minibus hire for UK airport transfers - £600 approx Therefore the minimum extra money required will be £620 pp plus £600 - total of £12,380 for all 19 youngsters. The leaders have paid the entire amount themselves, and not benefited from any group fundraising. Therefore, it is very unlikely that there will be much, if any, excess money raised. We will take the additional money with us to Nepal to be spent on your youngsters - sightseeing, celebration meal etc. If any money remains at the end of the trip it will be donated to Moving Mountains for a project within the village where we have been based.
  • 20. COMMUNICATIONS AND EMERGENCY CONTACT UK mobile phones - very unreliable, generally don’t work in Nepal - Therefore we would prefer the Explorers do not take their personal mobiles with them. Can detract from the experience if constantly contacting home, or getting upset if unable to contact home. The leaders will each have a mobile with Nepalese sim cards, which we will use for emergency contact with home as well as communication between groups during the project and hike. Leaders will make daily contact with a home contact in UK, by text, email or phone call. Parents will ONLY be able to contact the team in Nepal through the home contact.
  • 21. It may take a day or more for any message to get through, and in the event that a child needs to return home urgently, be aware that it may take several days for us to get the child back to Kathmandu and on to a flight back to the UK. We will be a minimum or two days walk from nearest airport, and further than this during the trek. We would like to set up a website that we can update every couple of days when we get access to the internet so that family and friends at home can stay up to date with what we are up to. Hopefully we will be able to email home updates and photos which can be uploaded to the website regularly. The Explorers will have intermittent access to the internet themselves, although this is likely to be minimal as time constraints will not allow a group of 26 people to all try to access emails on a limited number of computers with an incredibly slow connection! Hence the group website, where we can do one update when we are able to which you will all be able to access at home.
  • 22. ELECTRICITY Although most of the lodges and the village where we will be staying during the project do have electricity, it is not as reliable as at home. Therefore, keep personal electrical items to a minimum. Cameras - Disposable batteries or solar charging or spare battery might be useful. Books rather than Kindles (We can then all swap during the trip too!) No mobiles, laptops, ipads etc. Group video camera?? May be unable to charge iPods etc at times. (Books, playing cards, board games might be better entertainment!)
  • 23. ACCEPTABLE CLOTHING! Nepal is a country with cultures and customs very different from ours and it is really important that we respect these so that we do not cause offence to the local people who will be welcoming us into their communities. It is not acceptable for people to wear revealing clothing of any description - Male or Female! Shoulders and knees must be covered at all times. Don’t bring your best glad rags as likely to get ruined whilst doing project or during the washing process!
  • 24. NEPAL PREPARATION WEEKEND Friday 28th to Sunday 30th June 2013 All participants MUST attend this weekend as you will take part in several activities that are essential preparation for our time in Nepal. Details to follow but please put this date in your diaries!
  • 25. HOMEWORK! Language. Cultures and Customs in Nepal. Awareness of symptoms and treatment of altitude sickness. Awareness of how to maintain general good health during an expedition.
