1. Chief Ladiga Trail /
Silver Comet Trail
The Chief Ladiga Trail and Silver Comet Trail in NE Alabama / NW Georgia is a rail trail formed after the
railroad formally occupying the trail was abandoned. Currently, the trail is a continuous paved trail for over 90
miles from Smyrna, Georgia to Anniston, Alabama. There are plans to extend the trail through Anniston to the
Norfolk Southern line, when completed, the trail will be around 100 miles long! With both trails combined, it
makes for the longest continuous paved trail in America! Both trails are non-motorized and are great for
walking, bicycling, rollerblading, skateboarding, hiking, jogging, running, horseback riding, and dog walking.

The Silver Comet Trail is a rail
trail and is named for the Silver
Comet passenger train that used the
same route from 1947 to 1969. It
begins in Smyrna, Georgia and runs
west through Paulding and Polk
counties. The trail connects
with Alabama's Chief Ladiga Trail at
the Georgia-Alabama border. As of
September 2008, the entire 61.5-
mile (99 km) Silver Comet Trail was
paved and open for riding.
The 33-mile long Chief Ladiga
Trail is Alabama's premier rail-
trail. It is located in Cleburne
and Calhoun counties, in east-
central Alabama. The smooth
asphalt surface travels through
the Talladega National Forest,
and connects to Georgia's
Silver Comet Trail to the east.
Currently Chief Ladiga ends in
northern Anniston. Plans are
underway to extend the trail
an additional 7 miles into
Anniston, allowing a possible
train return route to Atlanta
using Amtrak.
