Apostles' Creed Session Seven -Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary
1. Session 6:
Who was conceived by the
Holy Spirit, born of the
virgin Mary
2. The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. AMEN.
3. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14
You will conceive and bear a son, the Son of the
Most High God. Mary said, “How shall this be,
since I have no husband?” The angel said “The
Holy Spirit will come upon you...for with God
nothing will be impossible.”
Luke 1:31-32, 34-35, 37
Before Mary and Joseph came together she was
found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:18
4. • In the OT, God raises leaders from barren
women.
– Abraham and Sarah
• Isaac
• Mary is not simply barren, she is a virgin.
Jesus is not simply a prophet or leader,
He is the Messiah.
5. What the birth of Christ teaches us
about him.
• Virgin-impossible to conceive
– The conception of Christ was a divine act.
– God, through the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit,
clothes himself in flesh and puts himself into the womb of
a virgin woman.
• Mary-ordinary Jewish girl
– The actual birth of Christ was typical in that it was no
different from that of every other human child.
6. Born of the Virgin Mary...
• Emphasizes the dual nature of Jesus
– Son of God
– Son of Man
• Divine conception – Ordinary Birth
• Completely God - Completely Human
• Lord of all Creation – Jewish Carpenter
7. What we learn from the virgin Mary
“I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it
be according to your word.” Luke 1:38
• Mary saw herself simply as a servant of
the Lord.
• Mary sets for us an example of the
privilege and the price of joining God in
his plans.
• We, like Mary, are asked to offer ourselves
to God, whatever His will may be.
8. • Is there something that God, through the
power and work of the Holy Spirit, wants to
do in your life that you are resisting?
• Are you afraid of what would happen or what
it would mean for you if you completely gave
your life to Christ?
