This document discusses different types of compound leaves. It defines simple leaves as having one leaflet per leaf stalk, while compound leaves have multiple leaflets per leaf stalk. Compound leaves are thought to originate from deeply cut simple leaves. The parts of a compound leaf are described, including the rachis, petiolules, and primary and secondary leaflets. Pinnate leaves are described as having leaflets arranged along each side of the rachis. Several sub-types of pinnate leaves are defined, including ones with a single terminal leaflet, ones without a terminal leaflet, and ones with an odd number of lateral leaflets. Examples of each type are provided.
