• The Hunger Games takes place in a nation known as Panem, established in
North America after the destruction of the continent's civilization by an
unknown apocalyptic event. The nation consists of the wealthy Capitol and
twelve surrounding, poorer districts united under the Capitol's control. District
12, where the book begins, is located in the coal-rich region.
8. BACKGROUND
• Collins has said that the inspiration for The Hunger Games came from
channel surfing on television. On one channel she observed people
competing on a reality show and on another she saw footage of the
invasion of Iraq. The Greek myth of Theseus served as a major basis for the
story.

12. FILMING
• Production photography took place in North Carolina. Most outdoor scenes,
both from the arena and from the outskirts of District 12, were filmed in
DuPont State Forest; the Little River, with its multiple waterfalls, provided
several locations for shooting the river running through the. For Katniss'
neighborhood in District 12, the production team found Henry River Mill
Village, an abandoned mill town
14. CATCHING FIRE
Following the events of the previous novel, a
rebellion against the oppressive Capitol has begun,
and Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta Mellark are
forced to return to the arena in a special edition of
the Hunger Games.
15. MOCKINGJAY
• The book continues the story of Katniss
Everdeen, who agrees to lead the districts of
Panem in a rebellion against the tyrannical
Capitol.
