This is a general presentation on fruit types and the specific information used to distinguish them. In my class, this input was provided prior to a full-on exploration of as many different types of fruit we could get our hands on. 2. “Fleshy Pericarp”
Simple, Aggregate, or Multiple Fruits

3. Simple Fruits
Develop from an single ovary

4. Berry
• Entire pericarp is soft and fleshy
– Examples: grape, elderberry, tomato

5. Drupe
• Exocarp and Mesocarp is fleshy
– Endocarp is hard
• Examples: peach, plum, cherry, mango

6. Pome
• Hypanthium forms most of fleshy
tissue
– Examples: apple, pear

7. Pepo
• A berry with a hard rind for an exocarp
– Examples - Cucumber, pumpkin

8. Hesperidium
• A berry with a hard, leathery rind for
an exocarp
• “Citrus fruits”
– Lemon, lime, orange

9. AGGREGATE FRUITS
• Multiple ovaries on the SAME flower
– Strawberry, rose

10. MULTIPLE FRUITS
• Formed from more than one pistil of
MANY flowers
– Examples, pineapple, osage orange

11. “DRY” Pericarp
• Dehiscent- splitting when dry

12. Dehiscent-Legume
• Pod dehiscing along 2 sides
– Example - pea

13. Dehiscent-Follicle
• Pod dehiscing along 1 side
– Example - milkweed

• Fruit formed from more than one pistil
and dehiscing in many ways
– Example - impatiens, jewelweed

15. “Dry” Pericarp
• Indehiscent- not splitting when dry

16. Indehiscent - Achene
• Seed tightly enclosed by a dry pericarp
– Example - sunflower

17. Indehiscent - Nut
• Developed from one pistil (more than
one are present)
– Example - oaks

18. Indehiscent - Samara
• A winged achene
– Example - maple, ash, elm

19. Indehiscent - Schizocarp
• Achene which splits into two parts
– Example - wild carrot

20. Indehiscent- Capsule
• Has “chambers” that dehise in many
ways
– Example - lily, yucca, poppy

21. Indehiscent- Silique
• Has 2 narrow pieces separated by a
partition
– Example -mustard, FAST PLANTS
