5. Friends and Family Carers Support Group
GROUP OBJECTIVE
The Friends and Family Carers Support Network for Personality Disorder was established at the Specialist
Psychotherapies Service to address the specific needs of carers of someone with a personality disorder.
As a service we recognise that providing care and support to family, friends or loved ones experiencing the difficulties
associated with personality disorder can be draining and overwhelming.
In relation to personality disorder, we acknowledge that the needs of carers should not be underestimated. Caring for
someone with a personality disorder generates needs and feelings not represented by traditional carers support groups.
The friends and family carers support network is a confidential service offering a bi-weekly psycho-educational training
and well-being programme and peer support group.
The group & programme intends to give you the opportunity to meet other people in similar situations, share
experiences, learn new ways of coping, develop new skills, and get advice and support from your peers, in an attempt to
reduce the impact your caring responsibilities may have on your mental, emotional and physical well-being.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Specialist Psychotherapies Service friends and family carers support network for personality disorder is committed to
providing a support function to those friends and family carers who care and are in relationships with people with
personality disorders. Through acknowledging the difficulties, sharing experiences, supporting one another, learning new
skills and empowerment, the group promotes well-being in order to understand the impact of caring responsibilities.

13. FACT SHEET NUMBER 1
Whenever you use a service, even over the phone, check out their ‘Confidentiality Policy’. Is it
safe for you to talk in private? That way you remain in control of your information.
Lots of organisations working with young people today recognise that a big fear, preventing
many people from using their services, is that personal information and details might be passed
on to parents, social services or the police etc. in response to this fear many organisations have
confidentiality policies.
Confidentiality means that whatever you say about yourself, your life, or your situation will go
no further than the person or organisation you talk to. Your privacy will be protected allowing
you to talk freely.
If it is thought that there is a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, some information
may have to be shared. Most organisations are reluctant to break this trust given to them by
people. They will only do so in extreme situations and when all other options have been
considered, or if you want them to. They might be able to help you talk to the police or social
services.
DATA PROTECTION
The DATA PROTECTION ACTS are important pieces of legislation aimed at protecting your basic
personal rights. Without them your details would be available to anyone, for whatever purposes
and you would have no right of privacy.
The Act gives all individuals general right of access to the personal data relating to them.
However:
• In exceptional cases some information may be withheld, such as information which may
cause harm to an individual.
• You may have to pay to see information.
This is a complicated area you should seek advice before acting.
A copy of the Stonham Confidentiality Policy is available on request. Please speak to a member
of staff if you require further information.

15. Child Benefit: from January 2013 higher earning tax payers who receive Child Benefit will have their tax
codes altered to reduce the value of their Child Benefit. People earning between £50,000 and £60,000 per
year will only get a proportion of the value of Child Benefit due to the way the taper system will operate.
Those who earn £60,000 plus per year will lose the full financial benefit.
Personal Independent Payment (PIP): from April 2013 Disability Living Allowance (DLA) will be replaced by a
new benefit called Personal Independent Payment for those aged between 16 and 64 years old. Therefore
children who get DLA will not be affected. Neither will those who get DLA and aged 65 and over.
PIP like DLA is aimed at people who by reason of ill-health or disability need help with their personal care or
suffer with poor mobility. It will have 2 components. There will be a ‘daily living component’ (which may be
paid at either a ‘standard rate’ or ‘enhanced rate’) and a ‘mobility component’ (which may be paid at either
the ‘standard rate’ or ‘enhanced rate’).
If you are presently getting DLA and you are between the age of 16 and 64 then the Department of Work
and Pensions (DWP) will write to you between 2013 and 2016 inviting you to make a claim for PIP as a
replacement for your DLA. As there will be no automatic migration from DLA to PIP and will need to claim.
If you do not claim PIP then your DLA will end.
The government intends that both the ‘standard rate’ and ‘enhanced rate’ of the daily living component of
PIP with act as a passport benefit for Carers Allowance. The same rule presently applies to the middle and
high rate of the DLA care component.
Benefit Cap: From April 2013 a new ‘benefit cap’ will apply which ids designed to limit the total amount of
benefit that working age people (people under pension age) can receive. The total amount of £500 per
week for couples/lone parents, and £350 per week for single people. Benefits included in the calculation
include Jobseekers’ Allowance, Employment & Support Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Carers
Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Child Benefit & Child Tax Credit.
The benefit cap will not apply if you (or your partner or dependant child) are getting either Disability Living
Allowance (or PIP) or Attendance Allowance. The benefit cap will also not apply should you (or your
partner) by getting Working Tax Credit, Employment Support Allowance with the ‘support component’,
Industrial Injuries Benefit, War Widow(er)’s Pension. The benefit cap will be applied by reducing the amount
of Housing Benefit payable until the introduction of Universal Credit. See below. People affected by this
change may be able to claim Discretionary Housing Benefit Payments.
For more information contact the DWP helpline on 0845 605 7064, those with hearing impairments can text
phone 0845 608 8551. The helpline is open 8am – 6pm. Visit www.direct.gov.uk/benefitcap
Bedroom Tax: from April 2013 a new size criteria Housing Benefit reduction will apply to social landlord
tenants of working age which will see people getting less help with their rent if they are considered to be
over-accommodated. People who are adjusted to have one extra bedroom will normally lose 14% of their
maximum Housing Benefit payment. People who have two or more extra bedrooms will lose 25% of their
maximum Benefit payment.
