4. Mise en Scene Props: Masood the postman, has a uniform & bag to represent this. Typical of this region. This also gives the impression that he is a local & by the interactions with other characters in the shot you can tell that he is a regular in the programme. Dot has a sling, this shows that she has a vulnerability compared to others in the frame. Tanya & Syed have things for the salon, this could reiterate Syed’s sexuality as it does take away his masculinity in comparison to Tanya’s fiancée Greg. Setting: The soap is set in Albert Square. In this particular episode the settings used are houses, The Cafe and The Indian Restaurant. You could say from this that the community is quite sociable, in most of the scenes it is not just one household involved, there are a mix of people in each house. For example Masood is at Dot’s, Roxy is at Jack’s. Body Language & Facial Expressions: The facial expressions in the opening, featuring Roxy, are quite angry and frustrated. They then move on to Syed, Tanya & Greg where the facial expressions are still quite frustrated but don’t seem so angry. This may represent their different lifestyle choices and how they affect their moods.

5. Positions of objects in the frame: Main characters are quite central. Costume/Hair & Make Up: Each is very character appropriate. You can tell a lot about character by looking at the way they look. Colour/Lighting: The colour & lighting in Dot’s house is quite dull, this could be suggestive of her personality.

6. Sound The only sound that is used in eastenders is diegetic. It is dialogue and background noise that you would expect to hear in a market square, pub or house. The theme music however, you could say, gives a lot away about the tone of the programme. It is quite ‘tinny’ and simple, suggesting that it may be aimed at a slightly lower class. It is also quite dramatic… which of course the programme is to.

Makes the characters look less powerful and vulnerable as they are secretly a newly married couple Shot of the drain, where it is pouring with rain – shows the weather how it is miserable in this region Characters positioned in a wide shot next to the pub shows that their identity is about socialising, by drinking in the middle of the day High angle shot of the train station showing the sign of Walford east station showing they are in London Wide shot of the Indian restaurant to show that the regional area has different cultures within it.

8. High angle shot of the lady standing, who looks more posh and sophisticated compared to the character we are looking down on who is scruffy looking. This shows the different class in the same regional area Over the shoulder shot of the man looking at the girl waiting for someone in very revealing and exposed in the industrial estate, which shows how lower class the area is. 9. Quick Straight cut editing from the different characters to show the fast paced life style There is a lot of conversations, therefore they use a lot of shot reverse shot. This shows the links between all the different characters in the area.
