The Peace Corps Act was permanently established on September 1, 1961 when President Kennedy signed the act. The act aimed to promote world peace and friendship by making American men and women available to other countries in need of trained workers. The goals were to help countries meet their needs and to promote cultural understanding between Americans and other peoples. During the Vietnam War, some men joined the Peace Corps to avoid being drafted, which caused issues.
