- Today Science World was packed with students from Vancouver schools and other districts. The kids were there to celebrate Music Monday, a celebration of music education throughout Canada and the UK. During the day, students sang in unison a song that was commissioned for astronaut Chris Hadfield. May 4th is also the 25th anniversary of Science World at the dome.
- Last week, the Britannia Secondary school community launched a fundraising campaign to support 18 vulnerable students to travel to Africa where they will climb Mount Kilimanjaro, visit the cradle of humanity at Olduvai Gorge and watch the Wildebeest migration in the Serengeti National Park. School staff and students launched their campaign with a media event. Following the event, the students visited the VSB Board office where they met with Associate Superintendent Scott Robinson, Director Mark Pearmain and District Principal Ron Bergeron.
- Mount Pleasant is proud to host the district’s only Knitting Club. Each week, Mount Pleasant’s knitters meet up during break time to work on their own special knitting projects. Teachers have noticed the knitting has helped some students with their self-regulations. Particular acknowledgement for this new club needs to go to kindergarten teacher Karen Husak. Our congratulations to Ms. Husak for her work on this clever initiative.
- Summer is just around the corner and it certainly felt like it had arrived at the annual Splash 'n Dash at Britannia Elementary. Last week, Kindergarten to Grade 5 students from Britannia and Strathcona Elementary Schools took part in a mini tri-athlon style race, by swimming in the Britannia Community Pool and running laps around the Britannia Secondary track field. Everyone left with a big smile and a medal.
- Students, parents and teachers participated in a number of events during Laura Secord Elementary’s Annual Earth Day. These events included Environmental Conservation workshops, presentations about eggs and chicken coops, an Aboriginal Storyteller, Yoga, Soccer, Street Hockey, a cow milking demonstration with the Mobile Dairy Classroom, garden planting and a fuel cell car information session. It also was a great opportunity for students to safely handle and learn about a wide-variety of reptiles including several snakes and turtles.

- On Friday, May 2 Queen Elizabeth Elementary was swamped with dozens of intricate and colourful Heritage Fair presentation booths. The booths explored different elements of First Nations culture and history. During the day, primary and intermediate students interviewed senior students about their stations creating an excellent peer-to-peer learning and mentorship environment.
- This April, students at Douglas Annex took part in an eight-day celebration of Aboriginal culture that included participating in a Raven Tales assembly, a storytelling session facilitated by Henry Charles, mask-making and the creation of a button blanket. Students also received some tips from a lacrosse player on the Aboriginal history of the game.
