who they are
2. 1
There can be few more controversial signings in
the history of football than when Tottenham
Hotspur signed him.
He was the son of a Bajan (Barbadian Creole)
carpenter and a local Kent woman and was born
in Folkstone in 1888.
He became the first outfield black player to play
professional League football, making his debut for
Tottenham in September 1909 at inside forward
against Sunderland.
5. 2
With his native club back in Cameroon, Canon
Yaounde, he won five league championships
before he traveled to Europe.
Twice named African Player of the Year in 1979
and 1982, he stayed on in Spain after the 1982
World Cup with Barcelona club Español.
He won the African Nations Cup in 1984. He was
the first African goalkeeper to earn a contract in a
professional club in Europe, and the first to keep a
clean sheet in a World Cup match.
8. 3
England has produced a long line of goalkeeping
legends over the years. He was the best.
Born in Sheffield, he joined third division side
Chesterfield as a part-time pro in 1955. After four
years, he was ready for bigger tasks and joined
Leicester City in 1959 for £7,000.
It was at Filbert Street he started to show his class.
He and Leicester reached the final of the FA Cup
in his second season, but lost to Spurs who
completed The Double that year.
11. 4
Born in Amsterdam 1947, he began his career at
local club Ajax in 1964.
His excellent skills on the ball, great pace and
ability to lift his team-mates to a higher level
made him an invaluable asset to the Ajax-team.
He lifted Ajax to heights the club had never been
at before. Six Dutch league championships, four
domestic cup titles and then three straight
European Cup triumphs 1971-73 plus a European
Super Cup and World Club Cup title on top of that
as well.
14. 5
One of the best defenders in the game ever, he
started his career in West Ham United and made
his league debut for them as a 17 year-old.
He won his first England cap just weeks before the
1962 World Cup and gained a place in the squad
that traveled to Chile.
He was a gentleman on and off the field and a
true leader which made him win the England
captaincy at an early age. He kept it for 90 of his
108 matches equaling Billy Wright’s record.
17. 6
He was born in Milan and devoted his entire
career to his beloved Internazionale.
This central defender or right-back blossomed
early and broke into the first team already during
the 1980/81 season as a 17 year-old.
He was soon acknowledged by national team
coach Enzo Bearzot and was included in the 1982
World Cup squad having barely played 30 senior
matches in the Italian league.
20. 7
Born in Lierse, he is regarded as one of the best
players in Europe of his generation. Having started
with his local club, he moved to Club Bruges in
1978 where he stayed for 13 years until he retired.
In the meantime he won three league
championships and was voted Belgian Player of
the Year three times as well.
He made his debut for the national team in 1977
and three years later he was impressive when
Belgium became runners-up to West Germany in
the European Championship.
23. 8
Born May 25th 1953, he was one of the most
commanding sweepers/defenders in World Cup
history. He was the perfect leader for any team,
and became captain for both club and country at
an early age.
Despite being only 174cm, he was exceptional in
the air and scored an impressive amount of goals
by headers from corners or free-kicks.
He was an unusual player. His scoring record is
quite unique for a defender. In 298 matches in the
Argentine league, he scored 99 goals.
26. 9
His club career started out in Korea with the Air
Force Club, and in 1972 he made his international
debut at the age of 18, the youngest ever
international for South Korea.
His debut came in the Asian Cup in Thailand,
where he played five games as South Korea
finished as runners-up.
His performances in Korea attracted the attention
of European clubs and in 1978 he moved to West
Germany to join SV Darmstadt 98.
29. 10
Son of Brazilian international Domingos da Guia,
Ademir da Guia was one of Brazil's most talented
midfielders in the 1960s and 1970s.
Starting his career with Rio side Bangu, it was his
move to Palmeiras in 1961 that led to one of the
most successful playing careers with one club of
any player in the world.
In a sixteen year spell with Palmeiras, Ademir da
Guia played an astonishing club record 866 senior
games and scored more than 150 goals.
