The term talent comes up more than any other when a company is looking to recruit for a vacant position and, let’s face it, no company would openly admit to deliberately overlooking such a highly capable candidate. But, unfortunately, the recruiting tactics used by many employers often drive talented people away rather than selling themselves to them.

2. When was the last time you took a look at your company’s job ads? Most do a better
job of explaining what the candidate must have than of selling the job to the
candidate themselves. So if your job ads don’t have a human voice, list merely a set
of required credentials and concentrate too much on “Essential Experience”, most
will simply look elsewhere.

3. They say you get what you pay for. This doesn’t mean you need to break the bank in
order to hire someone, but keeping them motivated with the promise of performance
related benefits, or a salary review. A failure to do this will not only have candidates
looking elsewhere, it also speaks volumes about the way a company views talented
individuals.

4. Talent needs to be nurtured and encouraged to grow, and this is where the working
environment is so important. Back-stabbing, sniping and relentless criticism won’t
encourage good people to stay. How can you get anything important done in a place
like that? Managers who can inspire workers will get the rewards in the long run.

5. Anyone that has applied for a job recently will tell you that bland and blanket
communication terms certainly don’t fill them with enthusiasm when it comes to
working for a company. For many, “Your application has been received,” is code
for, “You’ll actually never hear from us again but we can’t tell you that.”

6. If you don’t have a robust, active and effective feedback mechanisms in place in your
company, as well as an appetite for hearing what’s going on out in the big wide world
(and your office door), you’re pushing away talent without even knowing you are
doing it.
