2. In the beginning was orientation
week…
The first week at health academy was one that I will never forget. My car broke
down at the first day of class which was eventful and stressful. After arriving and
meeting Mrs. Denise Clarke-Hang, we were given our logins and passwords.
We were then giving many lectures on HIPPA, Officer Dick gave us a run down
on security, Misty from Volunteer Services, and the behavior that was expected
from us being in the health academy. I knew that after this orientation week, I
was more comfortable knowing that there were many people to look out for us at
these rotations.

25. Blog Example 1: Rotation 1
My first rotation at the CICU was indeed interesting.
Although the two days that I was at rotation, not much
happened since most of the patients were stabilized
after surgery and they were mostly asleep. On my
first day, my nurse, showed me how nurses check
patients who are diabetics to see if their blood sugar
levels are where they need to be. I was fascinated by
how everything is just scanned by a scanner and all is
recorded into the computer. I read my first medical
chart on my first day too which was neat. It is
amazing how when you walk into a patient's room,
you know nothing about them, but when you read
their charts, you learn a lot about them and their
condition. That's how we should go on in life, even if
you do not know the person, you should always think
of the best for them just like how a nurse and a doctor
might not know anything about their patient's
background, but they do all they can to save their
patient and to make them healthy again. On my
second day, I got to witness a nurse clean out a
trachea tube which is usually cleaned every four
hours depending on the patient. The patient that the
nurse cleaned has coughed a lot the night before
which resulted in a lot of blood and mucus that
needed to be clean, overall, the two days I spend in
the CICU was very helpful and educational. Next
stop... the diabetic unit! :) God bless!

26. Blog Example 2: Rotation 5
My fifth rotation was at the operating room! I got to see a
surgery finish up on my first day and I saw the beginning of
a surgery at the beginning. It was very interesting to see the
preparation of each surgery and to see the surgeon, the
resident scrub up. It astounded me how much technology
has helped surgery due to HD screens for me to see what is
going on. It is really neat to see what is going on inside the
patient during surgery. I got to scrub up for the first time
which was really neat. I got to go into their locker room
which was bigger than I expected. I am excited for my next
rotation at the PICU.

27. Blog Example 3: Rotation 7
My seventh rotation was at the NICU and this
by far has been my favorite! This was even
better than physical therapy and I said
previously that it was my favorite. There were a
set of twins that were only a little over one
pound...ONE POUND! I have never seen
someone so small and delicate. It really was
heartwarming to see how amazing technology
has changed the medical industry, without
certain machines, these premature babies
would not have a chance of survival, but with
the technology we have now, they will get better
and get healthier and eventually go home. My
nurse said that was the most rewarding part of
her job, was in the case of working with elderly
sick people, some get better, most do not and
they end up passing away. Working with babies
in the intensive care unit, they usually get better
and will eventually go home. This was a very
friendly and loving unit. My experience in this
unit was so positive and great! If I did become
a nurse, I would be an intensive care nurse.
Next stop, the burn unit!

28. Blog Example 4: Rotation
10
My tenth rotation was at NCCU which is the
neurocritical care unit. My day 1 nurse, Clara, was
phenomenal. She was so smart and explained
everything to me and I learned about both of patients. I
saw an old man who was attached to a ventilator and
how the nurse orally cleaned him. Performing his oral
care was interesting to see, the nurse used a
toothbrush, but instead of bristles, it was a sponge and
instead of toothpaste, it was a moisturizing substance
that helps his mouth to not be so dry. There was also a
woman who was only 28 and she was in the critical
unit because there were small bleeds in her brain.
Overall this was a really great unit with great nurses
who were very educated and kind. They were glad to
answer any questions.

29. Blog Example 5: Rotation
11
This was a really fun rotation. Following Tu around was awesome
since she mostly drew blood from newborn babies, but it was
heartwarming to see all the different babies. On the 1st day, it was
mostly drawing blood, but on my second day, it was super
interesting. I got to go to the different areas of the lab, the 1st one
was the blood station where they analyze all the blood that they get
and determine what the patient has or whether the patient is
improving. The 2nd area was the urine station where they
diagnosed certain things based on what is in one's urine. The 3rd
station was the actually blood lab where when a patient comes in,
she determines what blood type they have and she is also in
charge of making sure there's enough for patients who needed a
blood transplant. The 4th area was mostly focused on the big
instruments that they used to run tests and to determine different
disease and the last area was where the area that is infected or
cancerous that is removed from surgery is looked at. A doctor
would cut up little pieces and put them in a small case that looked
like a cassette tape and it would actually become slides so he
could look at it and determine if the cancer is spreading, is it
benign, etc. Overall this was a great learning experience, the lab
has great people.

31. Career Choice 1: Family
Therapist
The occupation of a family therapist has always interests
me because I have always wanted to help families with
their problems. I want to not only rebuild families but to
make them stronger and for them to lead a healthy and
happy life together as a family. To be a family therapist,
some schooling is required and most likely, is a master’s
degree in counseling. With the master’s degree, one
must also have at least three thousand hours of clinical
experience that are completed under a supervisor, and
state- recognized exams. Certain requirements for the job
of a family therapist include completing education
requirements every year and must have completed
courses such as sociology, social work, psychology, and
knowing modern foreign languages would be helpful.
With completion of the essential education, one can apply
to local agencies, hospitals, and clinics, but usually with
training and schooling, one can make connections for
future jobs involving social work and psychology (State
University).

32. Career Choice 2: Medical
Assistant
The occupation of a certified a certified medical assistant
has always interested me because I would be able to
participate in working in a doctor’s office and to help
things go smoothly. I believe in helping others and helping
the office run smoothly. I love the fact that I would get to
work as a team with the doctors. The schooling required
for this job would be a high school year degree, but with
it, one must also have training. In training, a student
would learn anatomy, physiology, medical ethics, and
medical terminology, laboratory techniques, clinical
procedures, and first aid. Training in computer skills,
accounting, and insurance processing is also essential.
With completion of training, one can acquire a job by
applying for the open jobs available through the school of
their training or to apply to work for a hospital or doctor’s
office. (State University)

33. Career Choice 3: Medical
Secretary
The occupation of a medical secretary draws interest to
me because right now, in high school, I am involved in a
lot of activities and I love to keep things in order and to
organize things for people to make their job easier for it to
run more smoothly. I would love to be able to keep track
of medical records or even to answer the phone. I would
love to help run a doctor’s office. For this occupation, a
high school degree is needed. One must be trained in
word processing, filing, and bookkeeping. Knowing the
use of computer and Microsoft word would help the
training also. Most places that are looking for employees
will have on-the-job training in medical or dental field, but
having some training will set one apart. Once one is
trained, it is easy to apply to different medical offices; one
is not limited to just one spot. I am able to apply at the
hospital or at the dentist office or even a doctor’s office.

34. Career Choice 4:
Receptionist
The occupation of a billing and coding receptionist
has interest me because this is what my mom
does for a living. I have seen my mom at work and
it really does fascinate me. The job is stressful,
but to be in charge of the money of the patients is
very fascinating to me. The education that is
needed is a high school degree plus completion of
a two year training program which will become an
associate degree. After training, one must take a
test to become a RHIT which stands for
“registered health information technician”.
Acquiring a job after all this training is often
offered by the place that one got training from.

35. Career Choice 5: Massage
Therapist
The occupation of a massage therapist has
interest me because I think massaging is
much underrated. People who are involved
in this job helps a lot of people to relive with
pain and stress. A high school degree is
needed plus training in a massage therapy
program which could last from 6 months to
12 months. In training, courses such as
anatomy, physiology, pathology, hygiene,
public health, and professional ethics are
discussed plus after training, one must past
to get a massaging license. Once you are
done training you can apply through the
place where you trained or you could apply
to country clubs, health clubs, or even
massage parlors themselves.

37. Lecture 1: Dr. Coleman
Dr. Coleman is a community psychologist and she works
in the nursing homes and with groups of people versus
being a clinical therapist who works one on one with
patients. Her hours are more flexible and she has time to
raise a family and live a life. She also gets to travel a lot
which was interesting. I found it neat that a lot of times
when one is talking about a therapist, one thinks of one
on one time, there is not a lot of talk about community
psychologists that work with a group of people. She helps
to promote healthy lifestyles and how to change one’s
environment to prevent problems to occur. She also
teaches to treat people as people, most time, in nursing
homes, there is a hierarchy and the patient is usually
treated as a “child” and is spoke with elder speak. Elder
speak is when one speaks to an adult as if the adult is a
child. The pitch of the voice is high and it becomes more
demanding and condescending. This helps out a lot,
when one is not talked with elder speak, the elderly will
feel like a person and listen and work with the nurse
instead of lashing out of frustration or anger.

38. Lecture 2: Dr. Summerhouse
A MD is a doctor of medicine and is one of degrees that
would fall under family medicine. The M.D. degree is typically earned in
four years. It was very neat to heart Dr. Summerhouse’s story, to know
that he went to college and was a teacher before deciding to go to
medical school was a very rare story, but it was inspiring that he went
back to become a doctor. For someone to say that it is not too late and to
go back to more schooling to become a doctor was
moving. Dr. Summerhouse is a D.O. which means doctor of osteopathic
medicine. DO are licensed to practice the full scope of medicine and
surgery which I was not aware of since Dr. Summerhouse said that had
delivered many babies and to even assist in surgery. I actually did not
know that a doctor had to renew their license and to in a sense “continue
to go to school” which I thought was a good idea.
Dr. Summerhouse was very funny and had a great
personality. I find it rewarding that he worked and went to school for most
of his life and now he can enjoy it. One of the perks of being in the
medical field is being able to be financially secure for yourself and for
your family. His job has allowed him to live comfortably, be involved in his
children’s life, live a life that he wants, and to do what he loves to do.
Even now even if he is retired and does not have a license, he can still
perform medical procedures under an emergency situation. It is great to
know that he loved what he did and he was great at doing it. He has a
story to tell others on how he did get to do a lot of things being a DO and
was able to assist in many different jobs.

39. Lecture 3: Nursing Program
The nursing program at Newman is a very convenient.
Not only is it one of the most successful programs, but the faculty can
give students one on one attention. Depending on where the graduate
wants to work, being a nurse, gives great opportunities to find a job after
graduation. Upon being accepting into the nursing program, there are a
list of requirements that are needed to be met, one must have admission
to Newman University, have a completion of 60 semester hours, to have
a minimum GPA of 2.75, an interview with the Admission and
Progression Committee, and once admitted, the student is required to
complete a CPR Healthcare Provider Course.
This is a competitive program and only a limited amount of
students will be admitted. The convenient and great thing about the
program is that is one is in high school and fits the criteria, one can get a
scholarship to where the student is already guaranteed a spot in the
nursing program once graduating from a four year degree. This is a
tremendous opportunity for the students are certain that they are going
down the career of being a nurse. Even though the program has a large
group of students, they are divided into small classes, which is suitable
for students who want individual help and students can have a one on
one relationship with their instructor. This will help them become more
successful. The nursing program at Newman is a ideal program for
anyone interested in the nursing field.

40. Lecture 4: Michael Poynter
A dental technician manufacture dental prosthetics
including bridges, crowns and dentures according to specifications
dentists send to them. They help make and provide orthodontic
appliances, crowns and bridges, complete dentures, partial
dentures, or ceramics. Michael Poynter was quite a character and
he explained this job very well. The job of a dental technician is a
very underrated and their job is very important. The job of making
the crowns and the fake teeth that go into helping a dentist to
perform their job is overlooked a lot. A job of a dental technician is
a great occupation and the odds of you having a job are quite high.
I loved that Mr. Poynter could tattoo his teeth. That was very
fascinating to know that even teeth could be art and for someone to
have different designs on their teeth.
Rachel Wiebe was also a great speaker and she
spoke her job as a dental hygienist and a dental hygienist is a
licensed oral health professional who focuses on preventing and
treating oral diseases-both to protect teeth and gums, and also to
protect patients' total health. They clean teeth and review their
patient’s records. They have a very strong bond with their patients
which is great. What people do not seem to understand is how
important your oral health is, when your mouth is not health, it
effects the rest of your body and how you function as a whole. It is
very important.

41. Lecture 5: Dr. Mark Toilo
Dr. Mark Toilo was a wonderful speaker. His picture of
how competitive medical school is was genius. For many students to go
to medical school and to be ambitious, a lot of them are lost and weeded
out from the rest. A lot of students are all thinking that they will be
successful doctors and dentists, but in reality, the very best of the best
will be the ones to succeed. It is sad, but it is the truth. Medical school is
designed for those who can handle the heat and to be able to make it
through until the very end. It is truly for the best students that will one day
be the doctors that will be saving lives.
Dr. Toilo’s incredible faith was extremely inspiring. He was
honest to say that dentists have the highest suicide rates and the highest
divorce rates. It is very easy to under mind and to forget how much
dentists go through every day. They are the ones that is hated on by
children and not everyone enjoys going to the dentist if not anyone
enjoys going to the dentist. I respected him a lot for being so honest.
Faith is a very important factor for happiness that is easily forgotten. Most
jobs in healthcare, being a dentist or a doctor, is extremely rewarding
financially, but that is where it is easy to fall into the pit of greed. Greed is
a very scary and addictive thing, once one wants more money, nothing
will ever be fully satisfying. For him to say that God has to be first, then
family, and then business, this may seem like a simple piece of advice,
but it will be a hard thing to follow once one is successful. Putting God
first and faith first will lead to a strong finish in whatever obstacle one is
facing.

43. In Conclusion
Overall, this academy has helped me a lot in deciding what I
want to do with my life. I have grown a much larger interest
in the medical field. I have also grown a greater respect for
nurses, their job is extremely underrated and they do so
much for their patients. Through all the lectures and
rotations, this was truly an interesting experience and has
shaped my career choices.

44. Plans After High School
After graduating, I plan to either attend K-State or MSU as of right now,
but “if you want God to laugh, tell him your plans..”. I truly do not know
where I will be next year, but I know that wherever it is, I will take it head
on. I also know that I will attend college with my best friend and to
become a clinical psychologist one day.
