TRAVELLING TO INDIA'S SACRED SITES

Notas do Editor

  1. Today I´m going to talk about India, because I think I´ve never been to such a different country, so I´ll try to show you some of the things I saw there. As you probably know, India is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, and the second-most populous after China with over 1.2 billion people.
  2. First of all, I´m going to talk about religion, because Indian religions form one of the most defining aspects of Indian culture. The major religions which were founded in India include Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. The 82% of Indian population are Hinduist, they are polytheism, they recognize numerous divine beings, one of their Gods is Shiva, you can see Shiva in the picture. In this other picture you can see a Typical Hiduist Temple. Other notable characteristics include a belief in reincarnation and karma , as well as in personal obligation (obligacion personal).
  3. Now I would like to show you Khajuraho where we find temples with sexual carvings. They were built between 950 and 1150 by Chandela monarchs, and sometimes they are referred as The Kamasutra Temples.
  4. These temples used to be where boys who lived as hermits, could learn about the world and prepare themselves to become householders. All these were achived through the examination of these sculptures. In this temple, you can see sexual scenes with animals too.
  5. In the Hinduism religion Varanasi is The Holy City, it is situated on the bank of the Ganges river. Varanasi has many Ghats, a ghat is a stairway that ends in the water of Ganges, and people use them to take their purifying bath, this is the way they wash away their sins. Many Hindus believe life is incomplete without taking a bath in the Ganges at least once in their lives.
  6. Varanasi is also important because if you want to be reincarnated, when you die your body has to be burnt and your ashes thrown into the Ganges. In the picture on the right, behind the boatmen, we can see some crematings, I can´t show you a better picture because in India it is not allowed to take photograph of the burning process. Every day, over 100 people are burnt there, it is very expensive , because you have to pay for 500 kg of wood and for the Holy fire, and the price of both are quite expensive. If you don´t die in Varanasi, your family must transport you there, and they use stretchers, like you can see in the picture. Sometimes it´s a long way, that´s the reason why in Varanasi we can find a lot of hospitals for people who are dying. The transport of people is cheaper if you are alive. In the first picture, you can see myself offering flowers to Shiva.
  7. In Nepal you can take pictures of cremating, that´s the reason why I show you these pictures, where you can see the ghats where a woman was going to be burnt.
  8. Islam is the second-most practiced religion in the Republic of India after Hinduism , and in the pictures we can see the Jama Masjid, in Delhi , one of the largest mosques in Asia.
  9. The Sikhism is a monotheistic religion founded in the fifteenth century in Punjab (India), The principal beliefs of Sikhism are faith and justice. They follow the teaching of 10 Gurus. Sikhism advocates the pursuit of salvation through disciplined, personal meditation on the name and message of God. Every Sikh men never cut their hair, either their beard, and they always have to carry a dagger (to defend weak people) and a steel bracelet (to remember Gurús teaching). In the picture you can see a little girl wearing two steel bracelets.
  10. In these photograhs you can see that transport in India is not as comfortable as transport in Spain. A common family buy a motorbike for the whole family, and I could see 5 people on a motorbike. You can see the picture of a bus and a van with a lot of people on, buses carry people on the roof!. In this other picture you can see a group of people sitting on the floor, they are waiting for the train. And What´s on the bicycle? It´s a block of Ice.
  11. Traditional Indian society is defined by relatively strict social hierarchy. The Indian caste system describes the social stratification and social restrictions in India, where social classes are defined by thousands of endogamous hereditary groups called castes. The castes system was abolished years ago, but the majority of Dalits ( in spanish paria), which is the lowest caste, continue living in segregation. The majority of Indians have their marriage arranged by their parents, with the consent of the bride and groom. Marriage is thought to be for life, the divorce rate is very low. Child marriage is still a common practise, and more in rural India, where most of the women are marriage before the legal age of 18. Look at the little boy eyes, they are painted with a black colour to protect him from infection.
  12. A sadhu is a Hindu holy men. They are dedicated to achieve the fourth and final Hindu goal of life, moksha (liberation), through meditation and contemplation of Brahman . Sadhus often wear ochre -colored clothing, symbolizing renunciation.
  13. To finish with this presentation I have to talk about Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal is a mausoleum that Shah Jamah built in memmory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The construcction was completed around 1653. It is considered as one of the most beutiful buildins in the world. It was built with white marble and precious stones.
