INTRODUCTION
 Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a form of
corporate self-regulation integrated into a business
model.
 An idea whereby companies integrate economic, social
and environmental concerns in their business
operations.
CSR also known as:
 Corporate Conscience
 Corporate Citizenship
 Social Performance
 Sustainable Responsible Business

Growing importance of CSR
 It is the responsibility recognized by the companies for
acting in socially responsible manner .
 Treat employees fairly and with respect .
 Respect human rights .
 Sustain the environment for future generations .

CSR in India
 Indian companies are now expected to discharge their
stakeholder responsibilities and societal obligations, along
with their shareholder-wealth maximization goal.
 Nearly all leading corporate in India are involved in corporate
social responsibility.
 Notable efforts have come from the Tata Group, Infosys,
Bharti Enterprises, ITC and others.
 The 2010 list of Forbes Asia’s ‘48 Heroes of Philanthropy’
contains four Indians. The 2009 list also featured four
Indians.

Tata Tea has been working hard since the 1980s to fulfill the
needs of specially- abled people. It has set up the Srishti
Welfare Centre at Munnar, Kerala.

NATURE OF CORPORATION:
 Originally, company has been considered an artificial
person.
 But according to law it is entitled to rights and also liable
for duties
 In India, the Supreme Court has categorically declared that
even though company is not a citizen, it can claim the
protection of fundamental rights, which are guaranteed
under the Constitution of India.
 Now, if a corporate entity enjoys rights, it has to bear
certain duties or responsibilities like natural person.

ROLE OF CORPORATION IN SOCIETY :
 Starting company in rural area.
 Employing socially handicapped and weaker
sections of community.
 Taking interest in work, welfare of employees and
their families including the spread of adult literacy.
 Environmental protection.
 Consumer’s health and safety.

 Social responsibility emphasizes the intimacy of the
relationship between the corporation and society.
 Means of production of economy should be so
employed that it leads to enhancement of total socio-
economic welfare.

ROLE OF GOVERNMENT
Governments should:
 Set the standards and right policy environment.
 Enact intelligent legislation and fiscal measures where
appropriate.
 Review of company law to secure greater
accountability.
 Interventions should be carefully considered, well
designed and targeted to provide the required
stimulation of companies beyond the minimum level.

BHOPAL GAS DISASTER
 The disaster at Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) plant
on December 3, 1984, released 40 tons of poisonous
methyl isocyanate gas (MIC)
 The aftermath of the disaster left 15,000 dead, numerous
ill, with a polluted environment that is yet to recover
 The victims of the disaster are yet to receive adequate
compensation and medical help from the company

behaviors and activities that society finds desirable and
that the values of the business supports. Like giving
support to charities or community projects.
 Ethical responsibility : Means fulfilling obligations
in all ethical areas, or as many areas as possible.

exercise reasonable care.
 Economics Responsibility: Economic responsibility
means ensuring that there is an economic benefit both to
the region from which the purchase came and to the
region in which it is marketed.

CSR INITIATIVES AND EXAMPLES
 ANAND CORPORATE SERVICES LIMITED:
Twenty-five years ago, the SNS Foundation, an expression of
Anand’s corporate social responsibility, was born. The
Foundation has created programs in the fields of
health, education, natural resource management and life
skills training, only to make sure that fellow humans could
breathe easy.
 INFOSYS TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED:
Infosys promoted, in 1996, the Infosys Foundation as a not-
for-profit trust to which it contributes up to 1% PAT every
year. Additionally, the Education and Research Department
(E&R) at Infosys also works with employee volunteers on
community development projects.

 ITC LIMITED:
ITC is engaged in elevating its partnership with the Indian farmer to
a new paradigm by leveraging information technology through its
trailblazing ‘e-Choupal’ initiative. It is significantly widening its
farmer partnerships to embrace a host of value-adding activities viz.
creating livelihoods by helping poor tribes make their wastelands
productive, investing in rainwater harvesting to bring irrigation to
parched dry lands, empowering rural women by helping them evolve
into entrepreneurs, and providing infrastructural support to make
schools an exciting platform for village children.
 LARSEN & TOUBRO LIMITED:
L&T promotes Construction Vocational Training in India by
establishing a Construction Skills Training Institute (CSTI) at
Manapakkam, Chennai and many other parts which imparts free of
cost basic training in farm work, carpentry, masonry, plumbing and
sanitary, etc.

VOILATION OF CSR PRINCIPLES : CASE OF
COCA COLA IN INDIA
 Coca Cola is one of the most recognized brands across the globe. It
ranks among one of the top foreign investors in India.
 High degree of public protest against the Coca Cola plant at
Plachimada, Kerala got international attention and led to
government intervention for closure of the plant.
 Plant at Plachimada was alleged to have exploited the ground water
resources leading to drying up of wells and other natural water
resources in the area.
 Company had to deal with protest from the local community and
environmental conservation groups.
 Company was also accused of supplying poisonous waste as
fertilizers to the local farmers.

INTRODUCTION  Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model.  An idea whereby companies integrate economic, social and environmental concerns in their business operations. CSR also known as:  Corporate Conscience  Corporate Citizenship  Social Performance  Sustainable Responsible Business 3
  • 4. Growing importance of CSR  It is the responsibility recognized by the companies for acting in socially responsible manner .  Treat employees fairly and with respect .  Respect human rights .  Sustain the environment for future generations . 4

CSR in India  Indian companies are now expected to discharge their stakeholder responsibilities and societal obligations, along with their shareholder-wealth maximization goal.  Nearly all leading corporate in India are involved in corporate social responsibility.  Notable efforts have come from the Tata Group, Infosys, Bharti Enterprises, ITC and others.  The 2010 list of Forbes Asia’s ‘48 Heroes of Philanthropy’ contains four Indians. The 2009 list also featured four Indians. 5

NATURE OF CORPORATION:  Originally, company has been considered an artificial person.  But according to law it is entitled to rights and also liable for duties  In India, the Supreme Court has categorically declared that even though company is not a citizen, it can claim the protection of fundamental rights, which are guaranteed under the Constitution of India.  Now, if a corporate entity enjoys rights, it has to bear certain duties or responsibilities like natural person. 8

ROLE OF CORPORATION IN SOCIETY :  Starting company in rural area.  Employing socially handicapped and weaker sections of community.  Taking interest in work, welfare of employees and their families including the spread of adult literacy.  Environmental protection.  Consumer’s health and safety. 9
  • 10. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY  Social responsibility emphasizes the intimacy of the relationship between the corporation and society.  Means of production of economy should be so employed that it leads to enhancement of total socio- economic welfare. 10

ROLE OF GOVERNMENT Governments should:  Set the standards and right policy environment.  Enact intelligent legislation and fiscal measures where appropriate.  Review of company law to secure greater accountability.  Interventions should be carefully considered, well designed and targeted to provide the required stimulation of companies beyond the minimum level. 15

BHOPAL GAS DISASTER  The disaster at Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) plant on December 3, 1984, released 40 tons of poisonous methyl isocyanate gas (MIC)  The aftermath of the disaster left 15,000 dead, numerous ill, with a polluted environment that is yet to recover  The victims of the disaster are yet to receive adequate compensation and medical help from the company 16
  • 17. TYPES OF CSR  Philanthropic Responsibilities(Be a good corporate citizen.)  Ethical Responsibilities (Be ethical.)  Legal Responsibilities(Obey the law.)  Economic Responsibilities(Be profitable.) 17
  • 18. CONTD  Philanthropic responsibility : Is additional behaviors and activities that society finds desirable and that the values of the business supports. Like giving support to charities or community projects.  Ethical responsibility : Means fulfilling obligations in all ethical areas, or as many areas as possible. 18
  • 19. CONTD.  Legal responsibility: Legal responsibility means to exercise reasonable care.  Economics Responsibility: Economic responsibility means ensuring that there is an economic benefit both to the region from which the purchase came and to the region in which it is marketed. 19
  • 20. LIMITATIONS:  INAPPROPRIATE FUNDS  A NEW CONCEPT IN INDIA  TRANSFERING COMPETENCIES TO INDIVIDUAL COMPANIES  RAISING FURTHER AWARENESS OF CSR  BUILDING CAPABILITIES  INAPPROPRIATE RESPONSES TO GLOBALIZATION  GAPS IN CSR PRACTICES 20
  • 21. CSR INITIATIVES AND EXAMPLES  ANAND CORPORATE SERVICES LIMITED: Twenty-five years ago, the SNS Foundation, an expression of Anand’s corporate social responsibility, was born. The Foundation has created programs in the fields of health, education, natural resource management and life skills training, only to make sure that fellow humans could breathe easy.  INFOSYS TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED: Infosys promoted, in 1996, the Infosys Foundation as a not- for-profit trust to which it contributes up to 1% PAT every year. Additionally, the Education and Research Department (E&R) at Infosys also works with employee volunteers on community development projects. 21
  • 22.  ITC LIMITED: ITC is engaged in elevating its partnership with the Indian farmer to a new paradigm by leveraging information technology through its trailblazing ‘e-Choupal’ initiative. It is significantly widening its farmer partnerships to embrace a host of value-adding activities viz. creating livelihoods by helping poor tribes make their wastelands productive, investing in rainwater harvesting to bring irrigation to parched dry lands, empowering rural women by helping them evolve into entrepreneurs, and providing infrastructural support to make schools an exciting platform for village children.  LARSEN & TOUBRO LIMITED: L&T promotes Construction Vocational Training in India by establishing a Construction Skills Training Institute (CSTI) at Manapakkam, Chennai and many other parts which imparts free of cost basic training in farm work, carpentry, masonry, plumbing and sanitary, etc. 22
  • 23. VOILATION OF CSR PRINCIPLES : CASE OF COCA COLA IN INDIA  Coca Cola is one of the most recognized brands across the globe. It ranks among one of the top foreign investors in India.  High degree of public protest against the Coca Cola plant at Plachimada, Kerala got international attention and led to government intervention for closure of the plant.  Plant at Plachimada was alleged to have exploited the ground water resources leading to drying up of wells and other natural water resources in the area.  Company had to deal with protest from the local community and environmental conservation groups.  Company was also accused of supplying poisonous waste as fertilizers to the local farmers. 23
