Why use ILT?
                                                                                           15 March 2005

                                Why do we need e-learning?
22. At any stage of learning, ICT could re-engage the unmotivated learner, and bring an
authentic and challenging task within their grasp.
Or ICT could make the difference between the boredom of the learner who’s always left
behind, and the discovery that they can find their own way to progress.
When you get stuck you can get onto the website and get on with it without waiting for the next lesson
to come along. You don’t get left behind. You can keep up with everybody. [Student at The Cornwallis
School]

25. Of course, the critics of ICT could reasonably argue that the teacher who makes his
or her subject come alive for their class is more effective than a computer programme
that is merely an electronic page-turner. And the technology is still not perfect: a
computer crash doesn’t help any lesson.

26. But we do not argue for a complete switch to new technology. Traditional teaching
methods and e-learning can and should complement each other. The new technologies are
capable of creating real energy and excitement for all age groups. Used well, they should
motivate, personalise, and stretch.

E-learning

192. E-learning is learning facilitated and supported through the use of ICT. It
may involve the use of computers, interactive whiteboards, digital cameras, the
internet, the college intranet, virtual learning environments and electronic
communication tools such as email, discussion boards, chat facilities and video
conferencing. E-learning should form part of the overall teaching and learning
strategy for each course. There should be appropriate references to e-learning
in schemes of work, lesson plans, assignments, course reviews and staff
development plans. An overall strategy for e-learning should be supported by
senior managers. Effective e-learning should:
• improve learners’ understanding of topics or activities that are part of
their academic or vocational programme
• improve their skills and their knowledge of the technology being used
• help to maintain their interest in their programme.
                         193. In particular, inspectors will evaluate whether:
                         • staff and learners have the relevant IT skills to make good use of elearning
                         facilities
                         • there are adequate resources for e-learning
                         • the quality and effectiveness of e-learning is well monitored
                         • there are appropriate opportunities for learners to use e-learning facilities
                         outside scheduled lessons.
Why use ILT?
                                         The reasons

•Because the future is here
ICT is the learning and teaching tool of the 21st century. By teaching pupils using ICT, you're
not only helping them learn better; you're preparing them for a workplace – a world – already
dominated by the computer. This is today's technology, not tomorrow's.

•Because pupils love it!
Incorporating ICT and multimedia resources into your lessons is a great way to reach your pupils
– using technologies, devices and applications that they already love to use in the rest of their
lives.

•Because it helps develop teaching professionals too
Teaching using ICT offers you the chance to inject new passion into your subject, to adopt fresh
approaches to familiar material, and to develop new skills to expand your own career potential.

•Because it saves time and energy
According to the 2003 ICT in School survey, the majority of Government-funded schools report
that ICT 'helps reduce teacher workload in terms of lesson preparation, planning and
assessment'.

Oh! And because it's fun…
Why use ILT?
                                    The research

A major DfES study of the impact of ICT on educational attainment in England has
found that 'ICT has been found to be positively associated with improvement in
subject-based learning in several areas'.

High ICT use – in or out of school – is credited with several statistically significant
improvements. For instance:
in English at KS2, high ICT users outperform low ICT users in National Tests by an
average of 3.12 marks
in Science at KS4, high ICT users outperform low ICT users by an average of 0.56 of
a GCSE grade
in Design & Technology at KS4, high ICT users outperform low ICT users by an
average of 0.41 of a GCSE grade

These figures come from ImpaCT2 study, DfES, 2002.

But first, let’s look at some…

TERMINOLOGY
    ILT
Information Learning Technology

     What’s that then???
Information Learning Technology
Puts the Learning into IT ILT
IT   =   Word-processing                 IT
         Spreadsheets ICT
         Databases

ICT =    All above +
         Internet (E-mail; World Wide Web)Clear?
         = ‘Communication’
ILT E-Learning ICT IT

4 IT: refers to the hardware, software and skills that surround a
  single stand alone computer.

4 ICT: refers to connecting together IT equipment to communicate via
  networks.

4 E-learning: Refers to those aspects of ILT, which directly support
effective learning and teaching. This can take many forms.
4 From the introduction of ILT elements into traditional teaching (PowerPoint
presentations replacing OHP slides for example) through to fully online programmes
delivered to remote locations with minimal levels of tutor intervention.

4 ILT: is defined as the application of IT/ICT to deliver and manage
  learning within education.

Using video in your teaching

Why?
•It grabs attention
•Short clips allow high levels of concentration
•It creates a memorable learning experience
•It breaks up the lesson activities
•It fits with student expectation – everyday norm
•Can add humour
•Can be shocking, awe-inspiring, motivating
•A picture says a thousand words……

The prince believes there is a desperate need to re-inspire teachers to
recapture some of the timeless principles of teaching
The Prince of Wales called for a return to traditional teaching methods
yesterday to give children a "proper appreciation of the world we inhabit".
