1. Getting SMARTer about Discovery Streaming Matt Strine Coordinator of Technology Integration, Propel Charter Schools mstrine@propelschools.org
2. THE END…Now What?!? When the video ends what do you do next? Discovery Streaming offers Blackline Masters that accompany the majority of their video collection, however, without ample discussion a worksheet might not serve as sufficient review for true student understanding. Why not provide the students with an interactive quiz that will highlight misconceptions among the class and give the teacher a chance to clarify the truth?
3. Video Quizzes If you look under the “Related Materials” tab, you can quickly see if the video has a supplemental quiz
4. Video Quizzes If you want to see the entire collection of videos that come with a review quiz, simply search for “video quiz” (there were 1,040 at the time of this publication)
5. Quiz Options When you click on the quiz in the Related Materials tab, it takes you to an online copy of the set of questions
6. Saving the Quiz Choose to “Save Student Quiz as MS Word” and then open the downloaded file
7. Avoiding a Headache The document that opens will be a linked style sheet and will want to save as a .htm file. Simply select all the text and then copy and paste the questions directly into MS Word. http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cXnXfTI2U
8. Importing into SMART In SMART Notebook, click on the SMART Response Tab and choose to “Import questions from a file”. Find your Word Document and let SMART Notebook do the rest!
9. Adjusting the Answers Because you took the time to save the questions cleanly into MS Word, each question is now on its own Notebook page as a multiple choice question.
10. Adjusting the Answers With each individual question you should now set the answer key and then save the Notebook file to use following the video.
11. Food for Thought Since the video is the property of Discovery Streaming, as well as the video quiz, do not share this Notebook file publically on a site such as SMART Exchange If you really want to get the most out of the video, download each segment of the video and insert them where appropriate after the review questions. This way you can discuss the correct answers, and then confirm the accuracy by watching the segment that contains that given information. BE CREATIVE and don’t sit back and passively watch the video!
