Economy of Berlin Before and after the Berlin Wall By: KamPrakash, Justin Connelly, & Ben Whiteman
Berlin began as a Manufacturing City  Berlin is the capital city of Germany Began as a manufacturing city Film capital of the World before WW II Largest university city Half of 1.6 million workers are in the service sector  Both Nazi Germany and Soviets led to economic downfalls
The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 The wall was built on August 13, 1961  Separated East Germany and West Germany 98 confirmed deaths of those trying to cross wall  Although over 200 are expected Officially opened on October 3, 1990
After WW II Germany was divided into four  After WWII France, Britain, Soviet Russia, and USA took over what was left of Germany and divided the demolished country into four parts  The city of Berlin was divided into four as well Talk of the Cold War worried the allies and they branched apart Those under the Soviet communism began to flee to West Germany East Germany began to lose its most successful professionals

Tensions grew as permits were need to cross East Germany ,[object Object]
Checkpoint Charlie was used to screen those wanting to cross

Brandenburg Gate ensured an entry to freedom ,[object Object]
Gate was sealed off when the Berlin Wall was built in 1961
Served as a formal entry way
Reflects the country's past(Memories from the previous wars) ,[object Object],[object Object]

June 12, 1987 the beginning of freedom for Berlin Berlin is 500 years older then our  own nation “Every man is  a Berliner, forced to look upon a scar” “In the West we stand ready to cooperate with the East to promote true openness, to breakdown barriers that separate people, to create a safer, freer world”
Many fled from the East to the West for a better life The West had more freedom Some fled just to simply stay nourished East Berlin saw an economic decline because of this Families wanted job security along with a positive outlook for their future
Berlin’s Economy switches to Service Sector Simultaneous growth in: Service science  research sectors Berlin is primarily a service sector  Currently  focused on: electrical  chemical   food processing
Berlin’s economy improves, while senior citizens struggle Daimler-Benz, Sony, IBM-Germany, and German Rail have headquarters along the Spree Poverty amongst senior citizens is increasing  New Regulations result in benefit cuts Berlin has the third highest rate of state funding for its residents
Berlin unemployment rate has significantly seen a decline since 2002
