Lab 6

Circuit Configurations
The Series Circuit

•  Single path from + terminal of source, through components, to – terminal
   of the source
     –  Current is the same everywhere in the circuit
•  There are 3 nodes in the circuit shown
•  If a component is added in series
     –  Break the circuit where you wish to add the component
     –  Enter the component and wires as necessary to complete the circuit
     –  Each component added in series adds one more node

February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
The Parallel Circuit

•  Multiple paths from + terminal of source, through components, to –
   terminal of the source
     –  Current in each branch depends on value of branch resistance
•  There are 2 nodes in the circuit shown
•  If a component is added in parallel
     –  Enter the component in parallel where desired
     –  Add wires as necessary to complete the circuit
     –  When a component is added in parallel does not create a new node

February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
The Series-Parallel Circuit

•  R1 and R3 are in series
•  The series combination of R1 and R3 is in Parallel with R2

February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
The Series-Parallel Circuit

•  R2 and R3 are in Parallel
•  The Parallel combination of R2 and R3 is in series with R1

Components Used in this Lab
VDC- The DC Voltage Source

Insert Anode, the + terminal up. Usually, the – terminal will be grounded

February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
VDC – Battery or DC Voltage Source

•    Orientation is significant
•    Two Terminals
      –  Anode
      –  Cathode
•    Enter component according to instructions or polarity of output will be reversed and
     considered incorrect
•    You can change the Part Reference (VS above) and the Part Value (12VDC)
•    DCL on the Reference or value and change in dialog box
•    CL on Component and CR to open Property Editor

February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
Property Editor

•    The Property Editor presents the part information in a spreadsheet format
•    All values and part information about the selected part can be edited and displayed
     or hidden
•    More difficult than previous method to change values and part references since you
must find the right boxes and replace the current values
      –  the red arrows in the graphic above show where to change the component value and part
         reference for the VDC source
•    Usually requires horizontal scrolling
•    There are easier ways to modify part values

February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
R - The Resistor

Orientation of resistors are not important – They are linear and bilateral

February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
GND/CAPSYM - Ground

Make sure you change the name is 0 or PSpice will generate
an error message when a simulation is attempted

Drawing a Series Circuit
Creating Schematics
•  When drawing a schematic, it is most efficient if you
   –  Place Components
   –  Modify part values and part references if necessary
   –  Move the part references and part values if desired
   –  Move and realign components as necessary to create a
      professional schematic
   –  Add wires
   –  Add at least 1 ground named 0
   –  Add one or more net alias if desired

Drawing the Circuit
Drawing the Circuit
•    Place the components at the desired location
•    Modify the part values and part references as necessary
•    Place wires to complete the circuit
•    Place at least 1 ground named 0
•    If necessary, place a Net Alias at desired nodes

Two types of Crossovers

When you draw a wire that crosses over another, you must pay particular
attention at the junction so the schematic is drawn correctly.
The presence of a dot denotes a node

  • 1. ELEC 101 Lab 6 Drawing Circuits
  • 2. Lab 6 Objectives •  Identify Circuit connections and configuration –  Series Connections –  Parallel Connections –  The Series Circuit –  The Parallel Circuit –  The Series-Parallel Circuit •  Drawing Circuits –  Entering Components –  Rotating components –  Changing component values and labels –  Selecting and moving components or groups of components February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 4. The Series Circuit •  Single path from + terminal of source, through components, to – terminal of the source –  Current is the same everywhere in the circuit •  There are 3 nodes in the circuit shown •  If a component is added in series –  Break the circuit where you wish to add the component –  Enter the component and wires as necessary to complete the circuit –  Each component added in series adds one more node February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 5. The Parallel Circuit •  Multiple paths from + terminal of source, through components, to – terminal of the source –  Current in each branch depends on value of branch resistance •  There are 2 nodes in the circuit shown •  If a component is added in parallel –  Enter the component in parallel where desired –  Add wires as necessary to complete the circuit –  When a component is added in parallel does not create a new node February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 6. The Series-Parallel Circuit •  R1 and R3 are in series •  The series combination of R1 and R3 is in Parallel with R2 February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 7. The Series-Parallel Circuit •  R2 and R3 are in Parallel •  The Parallel combination of R2 and R3 is in series with R1 February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 9. VDC- The DC Voltage Source Insert Anode, the + terminal up. Usually, the – terminal will be grounded February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 10. VDC – Battery or DC Voltage Source •  Orientation is significant •  Two Terminals –  Anode –  Cathode •  Enter component according to instructions or polarity of output will be reversed and considered incorrect •  You can change the Part Reference (VS above) and the Part Value (12VDC) •  DCL on the Reference or value and change in dialog box •  CL on Component and CR to open Property Editor February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 11. Property Editor •  The Property Editor presents the part information in a spreadsheet format •  All values and part information about the selected part can be edited and displayed or hidden •  More difficult than previous method to change values and part references since you must find the right boxes and replace the current values –  the red arrows in the graphic above show where to change the component value and part reference for the VDC source •  Usually requires horizontal scrolling •  There are easier ways to modify part values February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 12. R - The Resistor Orientation of resistors are not important – They are linear and bilateral February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 13. GND/CAPSYM - Ground Make sure you change the name is 0 or PSpice will generate an error message when a simulation is attempted February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 14. Lab 6A Drawing a Series Circuit
  • 15. Creating Schematics •  When drawing a schematic, it is most efficient if you –  Place Components –  Modify part values and part references if necessary –  Move the part references and part values if desired –  Move and realign components as necessary to create a professional schematic –  Add wires –  Add at least 1 ground named 0 –  Add one or more net alias if desired February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 16. Lab 6A Schematic <= Part Reference <= Part Value February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 17. Place Net Alias February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 18. Circuit for Lab 6A February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 20. Drawing the Circuit •  Place the components at the desired location •  Modify the part values and part references as necessary •  Place wires to complete the circuit •  Place at least 1 ground named 0 •  If necessary, place a Net Alias at desired nodes February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 21. Place the Parts February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
  • 22. Modify Part References and Values If desired, reposition the part references and values to make the schematic neat. February 2004 ELEC 101 - Lab 6
