Everest trek
1. Everest Base Camp Trek
The Everest Base Camp trek has been the most popular attraction in the Khumbu region, north
east of Kathmandu since the peak was conquered in 1953. Its scenery is amongst the most
dramatic in the Nepal Himalaya and takes you closer to the ice covered giants than many other
trails.
It is not an easy trek and requires a fair level of fitness and stamina as the trail begins at 2780m
with your 35 minute Mountain flight to Lukla and after the first day is mainly above 3000m.
Mountain Mart’s adventure team has designed this trek to minimise the risk of AMS (mountain
sickness) by including two rest days and keeping the hours walked and the daily rise in altitude
to a minimum.
Our Everest Base Camp trekking trail follows the paths that link friendly Sherpa villages and
rises and falls as it crosses the countless streams that carry melt waters to the lowlands. Two
nights are spent in the large town of Namche Bazaar with a rest-day acclimatisation walk to the
large Sherpa Village of Khumjung to explore their lifestyle, beliefs, skills and warmth. Prayer
flags, chortens, mani walls and monasteries testify to the importance of Tibetan Buddhism in
their lives.
The Everest Base Camp Trek Nepal continues to follow the ridges and as the altitude rises, so
the temperature drops and forests and farmlands give way to alpine scrub rock and ice. The last
village on the trail is Gorak Shep from where a long day leads to the ring of peaks that surround
Base Camp on the Khumbu Glacier with views of the difficult ice fall that leads towards the
summit above.
A morning climb up Kala Patthar (5545m), behind Gorak Shep offers superb views of Everest,
the South Col, Nuptse and the glacier below. In the afternoon, the four-day return trek begins and
becomes easier as the altitude drops and temperatures rise.
For this trek you will need good boots, warm and waterproof clothing, a good sleeping bag, a day
pack camera sunscreen and hat. Our Everest Base Camp trek package includes meals,
accommodation and safe drinking water
The main trekking seasons are spring (March - May) and autumn (September - November) but
we offer Everest trek during all four seasons.
