12. Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Medical Assistant the same as a Certified Nurse
Assistant?
They are not the same. A Certified Nurse Assistant is
trained to care for individuals in hospitals or nursing
homes. They focus on bedside care, feeding, grooming and
ambulating or walking. A Medical Assistant is trained to
run a medical office.
How is this different from nursing?
Medical Assistants are trained to run a medical office. A
MA is trained in billing and coding, insurance management,
front office management. In addition to the administrative
skills, they are trained to assist the physician in caring for
patients in an office setting. They can give medications,
draw blood, assist in minor surgery, perform EKGs, and take
vital signs.
Is there a selection?
There is not a selection process for Medical Assisting. This
does mean classes are first come first serve. You should
see your advisor as soon as possible during pre-registration
times.
13. Frequently Asked Questions
Will I have to give a shot?
In many offices, injections or shots are given. Medical Assistants are
trained to give injections to patients.
Will I have to see blood or other body fluids?
In the medical offices, Medical Assistants frequently draw blood and
collect specimens of body fluids which could include urine, blood, or
stool. Protective measures, like wearing gloves or goggles, are taught
and used in your courses for your protection.
Can I choose to just do clinical or administrative classes and skills?
No, you cannot. The program is designed to teach you all aspects of
running a medical office so you must complete the clinical and
administrative skills courses. Also, as an accredited program, CAAHEP
and AAMA require that both administrative and clinical areas are
covered during the program.
