A talk I gave @ Mosman Library July 29 2010. It's a brief overview of Flickr, its key features, the Commons and uses for the study and sharing of local and family history.

Flickr created this phenomenon by developing the ultimate photo-sharing platform. Participants from around the world share, tag and comment on their images. People can choose to share their joy, their sorrow and their perspective.

9. Flickr| Expressing Yourself It’s a phenomenon that’s hard to explain. Flickr has come to mean something to its members – excitement, community and freedom. It’s much more than a repository of beautiful photos. Flickr provides an outlet for self expression. It connects people, acting as witness to their experiences. It literally captures daily life across the globe.

Open Questions: Is there scope for Mosman Library – Local Studies to utiliseFlickr further? Are there volunteers available to help get the library online? Could Mosman set a precedent for opening up local studies to a wider audience? How many other libraries have similar collections?

Flickr| The Williams Family | A brief history The family genealogy experts have traced us back to the 17th Century I’ve ancestors who fought in the Boer Wars and Gallipoli I’ve ancestors who came to Australia in the 1850’s for the gold rush Some came out as Ten Pound Poms (and then went back) Mostly my family has mostly stayed in South Wales We’ve a heap of photos going back to the 19th Century which we’re going to put online on Flickr
