This is a presentation by the Division of Information and Technology Studies, Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. Advances in information and communication technology, especially the rapid developments in social technology such as wikis, blogs, social bookmarking, etc. have opened up new opportunities as well as challenges to education in schools as well as human resource development and training in public and business sectors. In the seminar, a group of experts introduce recent developments in learning technology and how these have been applied in different educational and human resource development contexts internationally and locally.

Digital connectivity is a transformative phenomenon of the 21st century. While many have debated its impact on society, educators have been quick to mandate technology in school development - often without analysing the digital fluency of those involved, and the actual impact on learning. Is being digitally tethered creating a new learning nexus for those involved?

It took 100 years to connect 1 billion places and 25 years to connect 5 billion people. Today, 85 percent of the world’s population has access to mobile communications, and by 2020 we expect there to be 50 billion connected devices. Mobile phones, tablets and laptops are making the school desk as we know it obsolete. Today’s progressive schools are having their classrooms rebuilt to turn them into multifunctional spaces to enable new ways of learning. A new Ericsson Networked Society report, "Learning and Educations in the Networked Society" , shows that introducing ICT in schools affects six principal areas. In March, 2018, we asked a deceptively simple question, does the future need schools? As we look 10, 20, or 50 years into the future, will ‘school’ be relevant? What are schools really for?

Adapted from www.educationfutures.com/timeline: Education Futures celebrates its first five years of exploring new futures in human capital development with a timeline of the history of modern education. This timeline provides not only a glimpse into the past and present, but plots out a plausible future history for human capital development. The future history presented is intended to be edgy, but also as a conversation starter on futures for education and future thinking in human capital development. Although this timeline is largely U.S.-centric, the trends impacting it are global. Please consult the glossary, below, for additional information regarding many of the themes presented. As always, we invite your feedback and suggestions for further development!

Accelerating technological change is driving dramatic transformations in society and in the workplace that demand greater imagination, creativity and innovation. What does this mean for education and human capital development? How do we fit in as organizations and individuals? More importantly, what do we need to do now? This talk focuses on the emerging qualities of innovation workers in the 21st century, the impact of social technologies and media (crowdsourcing, etc.), and “what’s next” as we build Society 3.0. This talk explores a framework for navigating our rapidly changing society, and plots a pathway for maximizing and leading with our creativity and innovation capital. (These slides were shared at Creative Company Conference, ITSMF Academy and the University of Oxford.)

The action of the next cyber saga takes place in the mystical lands of the Asia-Pacific region, where the main characters began their digital activities in the middle of 2021 and qualitatively strengthened it in 2022. Corporate espionage, document theft, audio recordings, and data leaks from messaging platforms were all a matter of one day for Dark Pink. Their geographical focus may have started in the Asia-Pacific region, but their ambitions knew no bounds, targeting a European government ministry in a bold move to expand their portfolio. Their victim profile was as diverse as a UN meeting, targeting military organizations, government agencies, and even a religious organization. Because discrimination is not a fashionable agenda. In the world of cybercrime, they serve as a reminder that sometimes the most serious threats come in the most unassuming packages with a pink bow.

When you’re building (micro)services, you have lots of framework options. Spring Boot is no doubt a popular choice. But there’s more! Take Quarkus, a framework that’s considered the rising star for Kubernetes-native Java. It always depends on what's best for your situation, but how to choose the best solution if you're comparing 2 frameworks? Both Spring Boot and Quarkus have their positives and negatives. Let us compare the two by live coding a couple of common use cases in Spring Boot and Quarkus. After this talk, you’ll be ready to get started with Quarkus yourself, and know when to select Quarkus or Spring Boot.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.
