1. Areas covered in Ethiopia
Summary
As part of the global public health program’s field study, I conducted research on the
prevalence of Iron Deficiency Anemia amongst women of reproductive age in Jimma and
surrounding areas in Ethiopia. I also strategized, developed and organized a health
education program; series of workshops and classes to community members covering the
areas of HIV prevention, STD awareness and prevention, substance abuse, nutrition,
personal hygiene, environmental health and awareness and prevention of the spread of
infectious diseases.
Accomplishments
I collected data on Iron deficiency anemia on women of reproductive age in Jimma
and surrounding areas and I found a positive correlation between the level of
education and consumption of iron-fortified food. I intend to present my findings to
the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia.
Due to my passion for community health education, I volunteered to conduct health
education workshops. I recognized a need to train local community health workers
to effectively conduct health education workshops. I pioneered a training program
for these workers using health education materials for developing countries that I
had already compiled prior to my departure from the United States. This training
material was primarily composed of visual teaching aids covering fundamental
elements of community health needs.
I also led community outreach programs in partnership with local community
Kebele administrative leaders. I used the same health education materials to
communicate health promotion and disease prevention strategies.
I also consulted and partnered with health professionals of different divisions at
Jimma Health Center such as family planning, Prenatal care, HIV testing and
counseling, Outpatient care and Pharmacy.
I supported the preventive health measures of the Ethiopian Government and
reached out to the vulnerable sections of society, especially those living in
underserved areas. I was able to convince the Kebele administrative leaders the
importance of public health educational workshops and also motivated them to
collaborate with future health education workshops.
I established a working relationship with several Kebeles that can be leveraged by
future Touro public health students to conduct community health education
workshops.
