3.What does OJS look like behind the curtain
1. Background
OJS is an open source solution to managing and publishing
   scholarly journals online
Highly flexible editor‐operated journal system installed on a
   local Web server {Steve}
Reduces time and energy devoted to clerical and managerial
   tasks {Beth}
Improving the record‐keeping and efficiency of editorial
   processes {Beth}
Improves indexing and discovery

History: html  Joomla  OJS
Online editorial process finally used [yay!] after initial set up
   in 2009
Most challenging task for journal manager (other than
   learning OJS!): expedited uploading of back issues—tons
   of metadata creation, manager needs to enroll as editor &
   author
Help with this? See the PKP wiki
3. What does it look like behind the curtain?
Practical considerations

• Server available access/budget
• Will editors, copyeditors, and/or reviewers
  have time to learn the system?
• Back issue creation onerous although
  expediting uploading saves a little time
• Initial setup time‐consuming
THANK YOU!
