2. Imperialism
• Imperialism (n) A policy of extending a country’s
power and influence through diplomacy or military
force
• Colonialism (n) The policy or practice of acquiring
full or partial political control over another country,
occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it
economically
• Annexation (n) to incorporate territory into an
existing political unit such as a country, state, county,
or city
3. Social
• the theory that individuals, groups, and peoples
are subject to the same Darwinian laws of
natural selection as plants and animals
• “Survival of the Fittest”
• This justifies the taking over of another
country through the belief that since they
are the “fittest,” they should rule the
weaker societies.
4. White Man’s
• the task that white colonizers believed they had
to impose their civilization on the black
inhabitants of their colonies
• While Americans were taking over other
countries, they believed that they knew
what was best for the other races.
5. Racism and
• Racism (n) prejudice, discrimination, or
antagonism directed against someone of a
different race based on such a belief
• Paternalism (n) the policy or practice on the part
of the people in positions of authority of
restricting the freedom and responsibilities of
those subordinate to them in the subordinate’s
supposed best interest
• Missionaries could be considered paternalistic
because they believe that they know best for the
people they are preaching to, and would change
their lives
6. The Scramble
• It occurred from 1880-1900
• It was a process of invasion, occupation,
colonization, and annexation of Africa
• The Berlin Conference was a time from
November 1884 to February 1885 when
European countries met in Berlin to
divide Africa among themselves
• Ethiopia and Liberia were the countries
not colonized
7. Nationalis
• Nationalism (n) An extreme form of
patriotic feelings, principles, or efforts,
especially marked by a feeling of
superiority over other countries
8. Colonized vs.
• Industrialized nations often thought that
they knew what was best for the
countries that they colonized, so they
believed that colonizing them would
make the colonized countries a better
place. (i.e. White-man’s Burden)
• The people were probably upset, and
would most likely revolt.
