Designed for Hong Kong primary children. Subject: Chinese New Year 2012

What did you do last year for Chinese New Year?
What is Chinese New Year?
Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year . Chinese people all over the world celebrate it, and it is usually in January or February. We love Chinese New Year!
The dates of Chinese New Year are different every year because we need to look at the moon…
We will visit our friends, parents and grandparents during Chinese New Year. Married people will give red packets or ‘ lai see ’. This packet has money inside!
We will wear new clothes and say special, lucky things to wish people good luck ! Gong hei fat choi! Happy New Year! I wish you good luck!
We also give small mandarin oranges for good luck and make sticky rice dumplings ! The streets will be decorated with lanterns in cities all around the world... London, England
We may see some lion dancing , visit the flower market and watch the fireworks in Tsim Sha Tsui too!

Chinese Zodiac
There are 12 animal signs in the Chinese zodiac ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Which animal are you? When were you born? 1985, 1997 1986 - 1998 1987- 1999 1988- 2000 1989- 2001 1990 - 2002 1991 - 2003 1992- 2004 1993 - 2005 1994 - 2006 1995 -2007 1996 - 2008
Western countries also have a zodiac. But it is different. Instead of animals, each sign is like a pattern in the stars. It looks like this 
" Happy New Year" We all know this one - it simply means ' 新年快樂 '. " Congratulations and be prosperous " This means ' 恭喜發財 ' - prosperous means 'to be rich'. " Everlasting peace, year after year " In Chinese, we would say ' 歲歲平安 ' " If the family lives in harmony, all affairs will prosper" This means that everything will be ok if your family is happy. In Chinese, ' 家和万事兴 ' " May everything go according to your wishes" This simply means that we hope everything you wish for comes true! Or ' 事事如意 '. " Congratulations and be prosperous. Now give me a red packet!" In Chinese, some naughty children say ' 恭喜發財 , 利是逗來 ' …but this is very impolite! Lucky sayings in English!

Year of the Dragon! Dragons are bossy and loud, but also popular, intelligent, gifted, successful and enthusiastic!
Dragon facts The year of the water dragon runs from the 23rd of January 2012 till the 9th of February 2013. Chinese dragons are important, traditional creatures to people in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Bhutan. Westerners believe dragons are evil, but in China they are very lucky and powerful. They can control water, rain, winds and floods.

Listen carefully! Which dragon is it?
The Story of the Nian Monster Once upon a time .... Long ago, in Han times, there was a monster whose name was  ’Nian’ . This monster came once each year to a little village and scared everyone! One day, just by luck, the villagers discovered that "Nian" had a some fears of his own.  He was afraid of the colour red  and even  more afraid of scary loud noises!  The villagers prepared. When "Nian" appeared, everyone in the village ran for the red banners and noise makers they had made. They waved their banners and rattled their noise makers.  This scared "Nian" so much that "Nian" ran away and was never heard from again!
