  2. Confusing issue, complex issue, goes by several names, being adopted more and more,Where do we even begin? How do we be strategic in our actions?
  3. Lets start playing with this complexity by looking at examplesType in all of the issues that come to mind in the chat box
  4. Name a few that come up in the chat roomComplex, diverse, large, difficult, systemic but they are not single issues
  5. Name a few that come up in the chat roomWe have grown as an innovative species but we’ve grown so much in specific areas that unintended consequences have occurred in other placesWe need to expand our thinking to incorporate all of these and other sustainability issues together, as a single system. This sheds light on the important of systems thinking in how we approach sustainbility
  6. Start with problems – walk through Nike and Ikea’s problems in the early-mid 90’s
  7. Let’s look at a business who is receiving increasingly negative publicity in their environmental performance
  8. When problems arise we try and solve them. One way is to take a quick and easy approach by addressing a symptomatic solution
  9. As leaders and experts, we need to think systemically about how to act in relation to the interconnectedness of sustainability issues.
  10. Like increasing our investment in branding/image (i.e. tar sands in Alberta)Increasing our investment can temporarily decrease the negative publicity that the organization is recieving.Another way to solve a problem is to instead of solving for the symptoms that you reach deeper to resolve the fundamental issue
  11. As leaders and experts, we need to think systemically about how to act in relation to the interconnectedness of sustainability issues.
  12. In this case we can say “becoming a sustainability champion”By becoming a sustainability champion the organization can also decreasing the negative publicity they receive however, the key difference is time and energy.Over time, if an organization is transfixed on continually solving the symptoms of their problems they will experience a side effect.
  13. Hypothetically, a Greenpeace attack. After this Greenpeace attack occurs (often a very harsh display of negative publicity) the organization is forced to address the fundamental solution of becoming a sustainability champion. This example isn’t purely hypothetical. Key examples are IKEA and Nike in the mid-90’s both of which are arguably leaders in their sustainability work. But the issue is that as leaders we are able to deal with complexity by appreciating the interconnectedness of our actions. By looking at our products, services, processes, life, etc as a system, we start to appreciate how to design away from the unintended consequences that have led us to the sustainability issues we face today. It takes a new frame of mind. It demands leadership.
  14. Fortunately, we have so much expertise in our world that we have a great jumping point. As you’ll see, these small areas of expertise represent “drill holes”. Electrical engineers, economists, sociologists, chemists, biologists, etc are all needed. The challenge of our leaders today is to pull out of their specific area of expertise, void of self-interest and look at issues from a 30,000ft. view (a societal view). This demands a common language and a healthy process. I am comforted to know of the experts in the room who have the potential to be the leaders the world is calling for. What expertise can you bring?Afterwards: how would things have been different if the humans were systems thinkers? Who respected the timing of natural systems? Our work is not to rescind our way of life to that of the Neolithic era when the wheel was invented. It is only to use our innovation and expertise to move towards a total respect for the land that future generations will live on.
  15. As leaders and experts who can see interconnectedness of our actions, we mustn’t forget that time is a key aspect of the big picture. “Meeting the needs of the present without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” This begs an inquiry into natural systems. Pay close attention in this video how the timing of natural systems is so important. It’s a long video but I ask you to kindly bear with it. It provides a strong message around this topic.Click the link and watch the video – when you are finished, type a quick message in the chat box and then we’ll move on.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT13GuPZHMA
  16. Tied systems thinking and natural systems into the rock video. If we understood what a sustainable society looked like then we could be strategic in our decisions to get there. The sustainability principles that I will speak about are taken from The Natural Step. They represent a lighthouse for our journey to sustainability.Lets work through these with an example. Lets imagine we are an IT company who is about to invest in a big solar projectEnter ideas into the GoogleDochttp://bit.ly/hsCZhFhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1oeC-zay--fZLoSLn-Vk4lxaxzk0U8uxZG1e8pFiheH4/edit?hl=en&authkey=CJfG-qkB&pli=1#
  17. Lots of words for Extraction (caption) – metals, fossil fuels, minerals, mining related things.Solar project issues with extraction? Scarce metals in solar panels, burning of fossil fuels to get them to the store and then your house.SP1 - Extractionhttp://bit.ly/hsCZhFhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1oeC-zay--fZLoSLn-Vk4lxaxzk0U8uxZG1e8pFiheH4/edit?hl=en&authkey=CJfG-qkB&pli=1#
  18. Lots of words for persistent compounds and pollution – often man-made substances that takes nature a long time to break down like plastics or chemicals. Tend to be foreign to nature.Solar project issues that we need to watch out for - plastics sheets cover the panels, SP2 – Man-made compounds/pollutionhttp://bit.ly/hsCZhFhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1oeC-zay--fZLoSLn-Vk4lxaxzk0U8uxZG1e8pFiheH4/edit?hl=en&authkey=CJfG-qkB&pli=1#
  19. Lots of words for land-use degradation – respect and embrace the biodiversity of the areas and that development/disruption is not a natural state for the land.Solar project issues? Mining for the scarce metals, wood for the construction, are there more natural uses of the roof space?SP3 – Land-use Degradationhttp://bit.ly/hsCZhFhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1oeC-zay--fZLoSLn-Vk4lxaxzk0U8uxZG1e8pFiheH4/edit?hl=en&authkey=CJfG-qkB&pli=1#
  20. Lots of words for removing barriers for people meeting human needs – need a tight social fabric to support the trust of a healthy society. Mistrust leads to isolation, unhappiness, even war in some cases. Subsistence, Protection, Affection, Understanding, Participation, Idleness, Creation, Identity, Freedom, Transcendence – Max NeefSolar project issues? Human rights of countries that people are purchasing from. Are employees fairly compensated? Conditions workable? 21. That was heavy – lets relax and take a quick poll to see how well that sunk in – more time you work with it the easier it becomes.
  22. System’s thinking, natural systems, SP’s……what’s all of it for?SP’s are our lighthouse – sail by navigating the winds and the rocks towards the lighthouse. It’s not a linear path!
  23. When we plan for the future we can forecast or backcast. If we backcast these principles are a brilliant future state to work backwards from. Thus we can be strategic in our planning. The ABCD Methodology is a useful process in this planning.Use an example….we are the sustainability strategy committee at StarbucksPlug ideas into our GoogleDoc.

  27. Based on the SP’s and our vision, we are looking at where we are today. A good exercise is to walk through the 4SP’s and chart where this conflict.Starbucks sustainability strategy committee – in what places are we in conflict with the 4SP’s? Write down a few in each area in the GoogleDocB - BaselineSP1 – ExtractionSP2 – Man-made compounds/pollutionSP3 – Land-use degradationSP4 – Removing barriers to human needshttp://bit.ly/hsCZhFhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1oeC-zay--fZLoSLn-Vk4lxaxzk0U8uxZG1e8pFiheH4/edit?hl=en&authkey=CJfG-qkB&pli=1#
  28. As leaders and experts, we also need to think systemically about how to align (or rescind) human growth with that of the rockshttp://bit.ly/hsCZhFhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1oeC-zay--fZLoSLn-Vk4lxaxzk0U8uxZG1e8pFiheH4/edit?hl=en&authkey=CJfG-qkB&pli=1#
  29. We have a vision (know where to go), we know where we are now, how are we going to bridge that gap?Uncontested brainstorming exercise of what actions we could take to reach that vision. The more the merrier. Add your ideas to the google doc.Starbucks sustainability strategy committee – creative solutions to bridge the gap?C – Creative Solutionshttp://bit.ly/hsCZhFhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1oeC-zay--fZLoSLn-Vk4lxaxzk0U8uxZG1e8pFiheH4/edit?hl=en&authkey=CJfG-qkB&pli=1#

  31. Now that we have these great ideas, we need to prioritize them to choose focus points for our immediate actions. Moving in the right direction (SP’s)? Flexible platform? Return on investment? – take a few minutes, browse the ideas and then add your top 2-3 choices to the GoogleDoc.D – Decide on PrioritiesBest solutions based on asking the 3 questions (flexible to future changes, moving in the right direction, good return on investment)http://bit.ly/hsCZhFhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1oeC-zay--fZLoSLn-Vk4lxaxzk0U8uxZG1e8pFiheH4/edit?hl=en&authkey=CJfG-qkB&pli=1#
  32. Congrats! You’ve completed a very theoretical (and probably abstract) exercise in the ABCD methodology. Because you are backcasting from sustainability principles and have prioritized your actions (sort of) around these 3 areas, you can be sure that you are being strategic when you are getting your hands dirty in the work.
