TIME: 1 minute welcome and disclaimer … MIKE TIME NEEDED for entire workshop: One hour (WE THINK -- CURRENT TIME ESTIMATES ADD TO: 73 minutes at max times – so we need to shave off 13-15 minutes from the max time allowed per slide/topic). PEOPLE NEEDED: One or more presenters/facilitators. Two or more is preferred. If two or more: divide up the presenting and commentary. One should manage” the activity and chart-writing at the end of the workshop by selecting and directing volunteers from the audience. SUPPLIES NEEDED: 10+ felt pens for writing on wall charts or flip charts. 2+ flip charts with chart paper. Masking tape to affix chart paper to walls. COPIES: Sufficient copies of this presentation outline as “handouts” 2-3 slides/pg. Sufficient copies of the three articles referenced on the Readings page (Mike has these in Word)
TIME: 3-5 minutes … CAIA “ Welcome to this brand new workshop that came out of a stray comment that I made at a General Meeting last month … and my happy experience with The Cohort Success Team that I’ve been involved with since September.” Ask : “ Is anyone else in this workshop involved in a Success Team currently, or has anyone been involved in one in the past?” How long have you been meeting, what’s your focus? If yes, call on them 1-2x for their experience and perspective during the workshop. INTRODUCE: members of “The Cohort” Success Team that are present.
TIME: 2-4 minutes CAIA ASK participants: “ Does anyone have any other goals they would like to accomplish during this workshop?”
TIME: 3-5 minutes … MIKE DON’T READ IT ALL TO THEM! Read the first paragraph maybe … then discuss BRIEFLY to move along. NOTES: Many Success Teams you’ll find on the web are either aimed at religious/spiritual orientation, network marketing, women’s empowerment, or toward career coaching services.
TIME: 4-6+ minutes MIKE ALLOW concise discussion but not rambling streams of consciousness … GENERALLY: ST’s will work best if all members are at roughly the same level or in the same stage of career … ONE problem with industry-based themes, or ST's of like folks, is that they might be competing for the same actual jobs - which might not be comfortable. also variety is actually likely to bring in ideas you haven't thought of before, a little cross-pollination of realms of experience Questions that might arise , and could be sensitive? How to respond/move discussion along? “ What about a racially-oriented success team which focuses on their search and their particular job search challenges?” How would this differ from an age-defined success team? Heterogeneous teams may offer more different perspectives than more homogeneous groups, different ideas and values … “ How would one prevent a Success Team from becoming a gripe session?” Stay focused on the positive. Some griping is OK, but cannot dwell … Need to keep the eyes on the prizes. What if someone asks to come into your Success Team and you don’t think they’d be appropriate for the group? your success team governs itself, and can only accommodate so many folks, or it loses its value for all. So you might have a rule about “who, what type or profile, when …” admissions to the ST can occur. a by-law of the ST might be: “by invitation only. A nominee must be enthusiastically nominated by a member of the group. The group then applies its criteria to the nominee’s situation: are they at the right point of their search? Do they fit our self- definition and profile? Etc.” Others ????
TIME: 1 minute …. CAIA “ Do we want to be alone against the world? Or … “
TIME: 3-5 minutes … CAIA Success Teams are a great way to QUADRUPLE your network!!! ALLOW: participants to expand the list. INVITE INPUT: “Any other benefits to Success Teams?”
TIME: 1 minute … CAIA
TIME: 5 minutes … CAIA IF RECRUITING: either via the Success Team Board or the Yahoo Group – be sure to state the focus of your group, what your criteria are, how many members you’re looking for, etc. ALLOW: a few questions, comments, discussion.
TIME: 3-4 minutes MIKE Weekly roundtable: each person summarizes week’s job search activities and successes (assign time limits, allow more time for folks with particular issues). Go over: # of applications; interviews; resumes sent or applied online; etc. – whatever your group thinks your metrics should be. 2. Skill focus: occasionally the Success Team might do quick skill reviews – These all require preparation. practice the 1 behavioral question that you most dread; your elevator speeches; why are you perfect for this job?” (name the specific job). Resume workshop (review each others’ resumes)? Cover letter workshop (review each others’)?
TIME: 4-6 minutes MIKE Invite a LITTLE discussion and commentary, but don’t let it devolve into a nitpicking session, a huge “what if” speculation exercise, or a constitutional congress. Common goals and consensus around them. DIVERT: too much “can we do this” “can we do that?” “What if something that some of us don’t like happens?” “ LISTEN FOLKS: your group can self-govern in any way it likes, right? Respect, focus on the goals, informality … these are what should determine your structure and rules.”
TIME: 2-3 minutes INVITE: “Might there be any other obvious rules that might make sense for a group you would be part of?” IF ASKED: share how The Cohort solved the addition of new members/succession planning issue.
TIME: 1 minute … CAIA
TIME: 1-2 minutes … CAIA
TIME: 1 minute … CAIA REFER participants to these readings … have limited quantities on hand for them to pick up on the way out. OR READ THEM ONLINE!
TIME: total 22 minutes CAIA Part I: 10 minutes – establishing ST types Part II: 10 minutes – networking and discussing Part III: 2 minutes – closure … what next. Evaluate session???? TIME TO DO THIS? ASK THEM TO DO IT IN THE GENERAL MTG? IF GROUPS are larger than 7 … split into two groups. FORCING you into groups seems odd … but realize, there’s no pressure to be in an ST that doesn’t work for you … 2-3 people is all it takes to get one started … then invite 2-3 more folks in! NEED: 1-2 volunteers to capture notes on wall charts or flipcharts … “chartwriter”. NEED plenty of marker pens available for folks to write on charts. CHARTWRITER will “ * “ (mark on the charts) the volunteers who will “get things started” for each group … then the chart/list of names goes to that person. OR; PRESENTERS GENERATE THE SUCCESS TEAM THEMES/TOPICS: based on the assumption that many people will just be glad to be on one, period? Some suggested themes: * get a job now - non-profit * your EU training cohort! * get a job now – corporate * start independent consulting or freelance work * figure out what we want to do when we grow up * over 50? 40? * under 30? * non-traditional jobs? * start own business? there is some overlap. what if I'm get-a-job-now corporate, AND 50+? which to sign up for? another thought... people may sign up for more than 1 ST if they are themed. we might want to discuss the usefulness of being on more than one team - or the fact that if you sit in ST's every day, you aren't out there looking.
