Organically Produced Foods
1. When going to the supermarket you are quite confuse. On the other side you are
looking at the much cheaper in cost fruits. While on other hand there is labeled
organically grown fruit. Comparing those two apples both is green, shiny, and firm. Most
of us will choose the much cheaper one. Now here is the catch, we are not aware of
how the fruit was produce. Yes! It really matters on how the fruit is raised.
Organic vs Non-organic Produced
No pesticides Pesticides Used
Apply natural fertilizers like compost to
support the soil and plants
Apply chemical fertilizers to support plant
growth
Used useful insects and birds and traps to
reduce pests (natural methods)
Used insecticides to reduce pest and
disease of the plants
Weeds are controlled by using chemical
herbicides
Manage weeds by hand weeding,
mulching and tilling
Why is Organic Foods more expensive than the non-organic foods?
According to the U.S. Agriculture Department (USDA), Americans on average, spent $1,
347 on groceries in 2004 switching to organics raise their cost of groceries $538.80 per
year. Based on the Australian study by choice magazine in 2004 found processed
organic foods to be 65% more expensive. Basically organic foods are more expensive
2. because it requires more manual labor and attention compared to its counterpart. Prices
of organic foods may be higher since it produced on a smaller scale and may need to
be milled or processed separately.
Is it more nutritious and much safer than non-organic Foods?
Most of us basically claim that organic foods are more nutritious and safer to eat
because it contains no synthetically compounded fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides,
hormones, chemicals used in food processing. Consumers are much concerned
regarding about safety of the produce fruits that they purchase due to possible pesticide
contamination. Based on the results of Quality Low Input Food(QLIF) in April 2009,
showed that organic food production methods showed that; 1) high level of nutritionally
desirable compounds such as vitamins/ antioxidants; 2) lower level of nutritionally
undesirable compounds such as heavy metals, pesticides residues, and glycol-alkaloids
in a range of crop; 3) a lower risk on fecal salmonella shedding in pigs. However based
on other studies “there is no good evidence that consumption of organic food is
beneficial to health in relation to nutrient content” by London School of Hygiene &
Tropical Medicine.
Well its still depends on you if you would choose the organic or non organic foods. If I
were you just to be safe I would go to organic foods, chemical residues on fruits are not
good for me. If you have allergy, chemical residues might affect your health. Also its
good to support organic produced food, the processed in raising the plants are almost
environmentally friendly unlike the conventional farming, the use of chemicals (such as
pesticides )might affect our soil and our health. Pregnant women and children are most
vulnerable for these pesticides, early exposure can cause development delays,
behavioral disorders, and it can be passed from mother to child in the womb, as well as
through breast milk.
