Geisha aretraditional, female entertainers, whose skills include performing various Japanese arts, such as classical music and dance. Their clothing is made up of several layers and it would usually take an hour to dress with the help of a professional aide. Geisha are often hired to attend parties and gatherings, traditionally at tea houses. Their time is measured by the time it takes an incense stick to burn. In the 1920s there were over 80,000 geisha in Japan, but today there are far fewer. The exact number is unknown to outsiders, and is estimated to be from 1,000 to 2,000.
Kabuki(歌舞伎, kabuki?) is the highly stylized classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-upworn by some of its performers.
Mt. Fuji, 12,388 ft in height, is an active volcano that last erupted in 1708.
The bombs killed as many as 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki by the end of 1945,[4] with roughly half of those deaths occurring on the days of the bombings. Amongst these, 15–20% died from injuries or the combined effects of flash burns, trauma, and radiation burns, compounded by illness, malnutrition and radiation sickness.[5] Since then, more have died from leukemia (231 observed) and solid cancers (334 observed) attributed to exposure to radiation released by the bombs. The Forbidden City is located within the nation’s capital, Beijing. Once home to the emperors of China before the rise of communism, it was the residence and governmental buildings of the emperor. No one was allowed to enter the walled city without the permission of the emperor. Today, the Forbidden City is open to the public and is a major tourist attraction. A Starbucks coffee store was located in the city until a couple of years ago.
The main square within the Forbidden City, Tiananmen was site to a massive protest against the communist government. Mostly comprised of college students demanding more civil and human rights. Eventually, the Chinese army moved in and squashed the uprising. A famous photo of the Tiananmen Square protest shows a young man standing in front of a line of Chinese tanks, defying the mighty power of the Communists. Today, no one knows what happened to the man in this photo. According to the Chinese Red Cross sources around 2,600 died in this massacre, however the Chinese government figure is 241 dead, including soldiers, and 7,000 wounded.

Bamboos forests are located in China and are home to one of the most famous endangered animals on the planet. Panda Bears rely solely on Bamboo for their diet. Today, fewer than 1,000 pandas live in the wild The Chinese government is taking steps to ensure its future.

The Terracotta Soldiers is perhaps the most famous archeological sites in Asia. The huge vault covers 20 square miles and was discovered in 1974. These clay statues are life sized and includes 7,500 foot soldiers, horsemen, archers, and chariot riders. These statues guard the tomb of China’s first emperor and dates to more than 2,200 years ago.
More than 4,000 miles long, the Great Wall of China deserves its reputation as one of humankind’s most impressive structures. First begun in the 600s B.C., the wall that stands now largely dates from around AD 1500. It was constructed to keep out northern invaders like the Huns. Its can be seen from outer space. It is 39 feet high,
MaoTse Tung (pictured on the right) is the communist revolutionary of China. In the 1930s a civil war erupted between Communists and Nationalists who preferred a democratic government. The Communists led by Mao won and many of the defeated nationalists relocated to the island of Taiwan. HuJintao is the current leader of China.
Construction on the dam began in 1994 along the third longest river in the world, the Yangtze. Benefits of the dam will be controlling flooding, it will allow large ships to travel inland and reduce transportation costs, it will bring electricity. The controversy surrounding the dam will create a huge reservoir and force more than 2 million people to move. It may also increase pollution since many industrial sites will be flooded. The baiji, a freshwater dolphin species that only was found along the Yangtze, is believed to have become extinct in the last few years.
The ancient practice of footbinding continued into the 20th century. Many wealthy families had their daughters feet bound in order to make the foot fit into tiny embroided lotus shoes.

Mongolia is a landlocked country about the size of Alaska and is comprised of deserts and steppes. For many centuries, most people lived a nomadic lifestyle. Although most people live in cities, some people still tend sheep, goats, cattle, or camels. They are famous for their skills in raising and riding horses. Genghis Khan led the Mongolians in the 13th century in the creation of the largest empire in history. Once under the control of China, today it is a democracy with the main religion of Buddhism.
The nomadic Mongols were the developers of the Yurt, large circle-shaped structures made of animal skins that can be packed up and moved from place to place. These yurts were used throughout central Asia.
Tarsiers are primates. Fossils of tarsiers and tarsiiform primates are found in Asia, Europe, and North America, and there are disputed fossils from Africa, but extant tarsiers are restricted to several Southeast Asian islands including the Philippines, Sulawesi, Borneo, and Sumatra. They also have the longest continuous fossil record of any primate genus,[and the fossil record indicates that their dentition has not changed much, except in size, in the past 45 million years.Kimodo dragons can weigh up to 150lbs and grow to a length of almost 10 feet. They are the heaviest lizards in the world. There are approximately 4,000 to 5,000 living Komodo dragons in the wild.
The highest mountain in the world rises more than 29,000 feet above sea level. Mt. Everest lies within the Himalayan Mountains and is located in Tibet and Nepal. Sherpas are Nepalanese guides who are expert climbers of the mountain. Mt. Everest is so high that it is impossible for helicopters to land at the top and many climbers use oxygen tanks at the high altitude.
Built by the Muslimemperor Shah Jahn to house the grave of his dead wife who died in 1631. It took 20,000 laborers 22 years to build. The mosque is made of white marble and seems to change color throughout the day as it reflects light from the sun and moon. Shah Jahan died in 1666 and was buried next to his wife. The caskets face east toward Mecca, the religious capital of Islam.
The Ganges River begins in the Himalayas and flows to the Bay of Bengal. It is sacred river to many Hindus who believe bathing in it will purify them. The city of Varanasi is visited by many Hindus. It is the place where many cremations occur on the banks of the Ganges.
Henna tattoos are traditionally painted on the hands and feet of the soon-to-be bride. The tattoos will wear off in a few weeks. Hindu men in India sometimes wear the traditional turban and a beard; but, the it is not as common among the younger generation. Women wear elaborate saris of rich bold color—even on their wedding day, Hindu women can wear any color. A bindi, or dot between the eyes of a women is a symbol of marriage.
Train transportation is widely used in India. Trains are often so full that passengers must sit on the top or hang onto the sides.
Cows are considered sacred to Hindus because of the dairy products they provide. Although Hindus do not eat meat.
Hindu temples look a lot different than churches in America. They are often colorful, narrow pyramids, comprised of numerous statutes. Usually, each temple is devoted to a particular god. One famous temple, is known for offerings of milks to rats.

Asian elephants are widely seen throughout India. Many are used for work. These elephants differ from their African counterparts. Asian elephants have smaller ears, and only the males have tusks. The tiger’s habitat is drastically decreasing in India and throughout Asia. Black market trading pays thousands of dollars for their fur and other body parts used in eastern medicine.
