 The Jewish Calendar's 240 Missing Years ...... 3
According to the Jewish calendar, Adam was created 5.765 years
ago. However, adding 4,000 years to our calendar indicates a span of
6,005 years. This article tells where both calendars came from and
how the Jewish scholars missed 240 years. Fine tuning the calendars
is a ncar impossible task. bUllhis research puts both calendars on the
same playing fie ld and makes them easy to understand.

     240 Missing Years
             By J . R. Church

Western civilization uses a calendar that
dates from the First Advent of Chris. To
us, it is the year A.D. 2005. The tenn A.D.
is an acronym for Anno Domini, Latin for,
"in the year of the Lord." That is, approxi-

In 1653, Bishop James Ussher set the date
for the birth of Christ at 4 B.C., claiming
                     that our calendar was
                     in error by four years.

  What Happened to 240 Years?
Dr. Fred Nolen Jones, in his book, The
Chronology oJthe Old Testament, reported
that early Jewish historians dated historical
events from 312 B.C., the time of the estab-
lishment of the Seleucid dynasty. Seleucus
was one of four genera ls who divided
the Greek Empire following the death of
Alexander the Greal. According to James
Ussher's chrono logy, in 3 12 B.C., Seleucus
recovered his kingdom from Antigonus.
However, Jewish sourees claim this da t-

made to Alexander the Greal. They call it For the answer, we should begin at Baby- of Syria. They gave Antiochus the king-

years the tropical year shifted one day
backwards with respect to Ihe calendar.
Furthermore, the method for calculating the
dates fo r Easter was inaccurate and needed
to be refined.
In order to remedy this, two steps were
necessary: First, the Julian calendar had to
be replaced by something more adequate;
and secondly, the extra days that the Julian
calendar had inserted hlld 10 be dropped.
The solution to the first problem was the
Gregorian calendar. The solution to the
second problem depended on the fac t that
it was felt thllt Mareh 21 was the proper
day for vcmal equinox (because March 21
was the date for vernal equinox during the
Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325).
Therefore, the Gregorian ca lendar was
ca librated to make March 21 the vemal
equinox. By 1582, the vernal equinox had
moved approximately ten days backwards.
So, ten days were dropped.
The changeover to the Gregorian cal-
endar system occurred on ly in Rom an
Catholic countries. However, adoption of
the Gregorian calendar in the rest of the
world progressed slowly. For example, for
England and its colonies, the change did not
occur unti l September 1752.

Michacl SIms- sfeld referred to this as Mah Nishtanah (meaning "Four Questions") saying, "Th is famou s section is usually recited by the youngest child, though, in fact, anyone can ask 'Why is this night dif- ferent?' Peter hadjusl asked the first question: "Lord, whither goeSI thou?" (John 13:36). John opens chapter 14 with this reply: "Let not yOllr heart be troubled: ye be- lieve in God, believe a/so in me. It comes at a time when rabbis are not even allowed on the Temple Mount, except in small groups, for a limi ted time. Yet they arc now making plans to place a building there!
