Mommy how is a baby born
1. Mommy, How Is a baby Born? By – Dr.Hemant Mittal (MBBS, PG.DPM) Emotional, behavioral and sexual health consultant Email – eksoch@gmail.com www.mindmantra.in Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
2. The Awakening… “Riya started her periods, now I am worried when should I talk to her about… you know!!” “Ishant’s pajamas were dirty with sperms this morning. I wonder what’s going in his mind?” “I saw Lavina talking with a guy, for god sake’s she is 16, I don’t want her to become pregnant!” “I saw adult videos and photos on Bhusan’s mobile phone. I don’t know what to do?” Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
3. Sex…The dreaded topic? Every week I get emails, phone calls and personal visits from teachers, lawyers, doctors, accountants, housewives and businessmen…all united by a common problem… “how to talk about SEX with their teenage child” “The Sex Talk” is one of the toughest and most delicate milestones of parenthood. Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
4. The Big Failure Unfortunately in context of India and the traditional Indian society, I have found that 90% parents miserably fail in delivering a successful “The Sex Talk” What instead is communicated is an erroneous message which confuses the child and in many cases encourage him/her to experiment. Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
5. The reality Every year the Indian Teenagers are becoming more and more sexually active. The biggest marker of the same is: The rise in number of teenage pregnancies, Increase in sale of emergency abortion pill or “ipill” Increase in number of young cases with HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
6. Why “The Sex Talk” fails? Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
7. 1. Children have more information! In today’s world information travels at the speed of light. Children get all their information from Friends, Television and Internet. Parents normally lack many answers. Specially those parents who are having sexual problems themselves. Questions that are never answered- What is the truth? Who is to be followed? Why does my body and mind get pleasure from it? Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
8. 2. Parents don’t talk, dictate! Most kids that come to me for “sex education counseling” have a simple grudge – “I might talk to them for hours, but in the end they just tell me what to follow. They never listen to me. Never explain anything in MY terms. Its always them and their ways of living life. Why should I follow? I want to do what my friends say!” Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
9. 3.Moral Values? Every parent preaches about “Moral Values and Religious Beliefs”…But no one cares to explains there meanings to the child. Every Religious Belief and Moral Value has a valid explanation… and until that explanation is not given the belief or value will never be imbibed by the subconscious. Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
10. Common questions children have asked me: “God created sex, then why does religion say that a man and woman shouldn’t have sex before marriage?” “Masturbation is bad because religion says so. But I can't control it. And when I do, I have night fall. Am I a sinner.” “My Parents say that thinking about a boy is bad. But then why do they show it in TV serials and movies” “When I see a kiss on TV I get a penile erection. My mom told me its bad. How can I control it? “My parents told me sex is bad before marriage, but oral sex is not complete sex. Can I have that?” Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
11. 4. No Biological Explanation! “Penis, Testis, Vagina, Breast, Uterus, Cervix, Sperm, Masturbation, Periods, Penile erection, Vaginal excitation, Oral sex, Homosexuality, Date Rape” 90% parents will turn red-faced while 95% kids will giggle on mere mention of these words. How can a kid know what to do and what not to do if he/she doesn’t know about their own body? Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
12. 5. The wrong Expert Most parents who want to avoid talking about sex, leave the topic of Sex Education onto teachers and the education system. Unfortunately teachers are overworked and many a times under knowledge on this topic. They don’t answer all queries of every single child. Many parents feel shy or tabooed on talking to Sex Therapist or Sexologist to guide them on this issue. Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
13. “Knowledge is the best prevention… But what if the knowledge is not given properly…???” Dr.Hemant Mittal / www.mindmantra.in
