Mama Mary & Missio Dei Whatever mission we want to talk about, it must begin with the mission of God (notice how often Mary speaks of what God is doing), & this God is worthy of glory, is holy, is merciful, & is faithful to his promises to Abraham. Humility before God, which is connected to Mary’s condition of poverty, is honored in the mission of God (1:48). The mission of God involves establishing justice (1:51-53). The mission of God involves political leaders (1:52). The mission of God involves basic human needs (1:53). The mission of God involves exalting Mary’s son — the theme driving the Magnificat.

John the Baptist & Missio Dei Luke 3:1-18 – In the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea & Traconitis, & Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene—during the high–priesthood of Annas & Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain & hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all people will see God’s salvation.

John calls the nation; individuals “enlist” in his vision by being baptised. The mission of God fulfills Isa 40:3-5 & this means JB is the Voice who cries out that everything should get ready for the coming of God to Zion who comes to save (which evokes the name “Jesus” — savior). JB saw himself as the “Voice.” (Jesus, by the way, saw JB as “Elijah.”)

He stood up to read, & the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners & recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

39. Jesus & Missio Dei All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, & took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. But he walked right through the crowd & went on his way.

40. Jesus & Missio Dei Jesus publicly announces the centrality of himself to the mission of God (4:21). Jesus sees his own mission in Isa 61:1-2, that means his mission involves justice for the poor, prisoners, the blind, & the oppressed. The mission of Jesus is a Jubilee mission (4:19). The mission of Jesus creates disturbances & rejection (4:24). Mga Kababayanreject Jesus (4:24-29). The mission of Jesus will extend beyond the normal boundaries.

41. Disciples & Missio Dei Jesus enlists others in his mission — & one can see this as an evangelistic summons into the work of the kingdom by attachment to Jesus. A good place to see this is the fuller story of Peter’s “conversion” in Luke 5:1-11.

42. Disciples & Missio Dei Luke 5:1-11 – One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him & listening to the word of God. He saw at the water’s edge 2 boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, & asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down & taught the people from the boat.

Disciples & Missio Dei When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, & let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night & haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come & help them, & they came & filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

Disciples & Missio Dei When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees & said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he & all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, & so were James & John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything & followed him.

45. Disciples & Missio Dei Jesus is a preacher of the word (5:1-3) & it is out of that context that he summons Peter. Encountering Jesus brings bewilderment, wonder, & awe — leading to repentance (5:5, 8, 9-10). Jesus shares his mission with those who are attached to him (5:10). Those who participate in the mission of Jesus are called to enlist others in the mission of Jesus — by attaching themselves through them to Jesus (5:11).

Ushers in the Kingdom of God & focuses it around himself

49. Implications for Disciple/Church Living Under the King The Kingdom of God is central & extends in & beyond the church to his entire cosmos. We are agents of the Kingdom in all areas of life common to human being. Jesus is Lord/King! We can live & work wherever we are & we can expect the Kingdom to already be there.
