1 Now Naomi had a relative of her husband's, a
worthy man of the clan of Elimelech, whose name
was Boaz.2 And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi,
Let me go to the field and glean among the ears of
grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor. And
she said to her, Go, my daughter.3 So she set out
and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers,
and she happened to come to the part of the field
belonging to Boaz, who was of the clan of
Elimelech.
Don’t Have Too
Much of a Plan for
   Your life.
4 And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem. And he
said to the reapers, The Lord be with you! And they
answered, The Lord bless you.5 Then Boaz said to
his young man who was in charge of the reapers,
Whose young woman is this?
6 And the servant who was in charge of the reapers
answered, She is the young Moabite woman, who
came back with Naomi from the country of Moab.
7 She said, Please let me glean and gather among
the sheaves after the reapers. So she came, and
she has continued from early morning until now,
except for a short rest.
8  Then Boaz said to Ruth, Now, listen, my
daughter, do not go to glean in another field or
leave this one, but keep close to my young women.
9 Let your eyes be on the field that they are
reaping, and go after them. Have I not charged the
young men not to touch you? And when you are
thirsty, go to the vessels and drink what the young
men have drawn.
10 Then she fell on her face, bowing to the ground,
and said to him, Why have I found favor in your
eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am
a foreigner?11 But Boaz answered her, All that you
have done for your mother-in-law since the death of
your husband has been fully told to me, and how
you left your father and mother and your native land
and came to a people that you did not know before.
12 The Lord repay you for what you have done, and
a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of
Israel, under whose wings you have come to take
refuge!13 Then she said, I have found favor in your
eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me and
spoken kindly to your servant, though I am not one
of your servants.
14  And at mealtime Boaz said to her, Come here
and eat some bread and dip your morsel in the
wine. So she sat beside the reapers, and he passed
to her roasted grain. And she ate until she was
satisfied, and she had some left over.15 When she
rose to glean, Boaz instructed his young men,
saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and
do not reproach her.16 And also pull out some from
the bundles for her and leave it for her to glean, and
do not rebuke her.
17  So she gleaned in the field until evening. Then
she beat out what she had gleaned, and it was
about an ephah of barley.18 And she took it up and
went into the city. Her mother-in-law saw what she
had gleaned. She also brought out and gave her
what food she had left over after being satisfied.
19 And her mother-in-law said to her, Where did
you glean today? And where have you worked?
Blessed be the man who took notice of you. So she
told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked
and said, The man's name with whom I worked
today is Boaz.

Matthew 23:37
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets
and stoning those who are sent to you! How
often would I have gathered your children
together as a hen gathers her brood under
her wings, and you would not! Behold, your
house is forsaken and desolate.

Notas do Editor

  1. Last week we took a look at the tragic beginnings of this book. Naomi has lost it all, and is feeling “bitter” concerning what God has laid in her path. She has forgotten through it all, that God is to be trusted and plotting for our glory, even in the midst of our tragedies
  2. Ruth is a woman of guts and humility “happened” -- God has a plan, but you must plan for the day She takes the initiative to care for Naomi Gleaning is the collecting of scraps by the poor... (LEV & DEUT command this)
  3. God has a bigger one and you might mess it up:) We will see that it is ok, to plan for the day, and make plans, but don’t be devastated when God changes them Our 3 year plan changed, my heart for scripture changed, our security changed, our state changed, and our roots are growing deep, knowing they may be ripped out
  4. Boaz said a blessing over these workers..... He has respect for and the respect of his workers Young man in charge of the reapers... makes sure there is no unwarranted waste
  5. Ruth asked first....... even though it was her right Also aware that she wouldn’t be totally accepted but didn’t care The foreman mentions her hard work, something he would have noticed and been impressed with
  6. Many gleaners would have to travel far to get enough, but Boaz is saying that he will take care of her.... we are about to find out why? He is offering protection to a foreign woman, who would have surely been accosted
  7. Her humility pours out again, and gushes after such a long period of tragedy and feeling like an outsider
  8. “wings” -- symbol of God as protector.. we see Jesus speak the same over Jerusalem when he prays for them She thanking him, but the Hebrew shows it is more of a “hope for the future” The word used here for servant, SHIPAH, was used for the lowliest of social classes..... she is claiming that she is the lowest of the low Like the woman who asks for the scraps of healing, like a dog at the table, from Jesus
  9. Boaz serves her!! He is eating with a foreigner, which wasn’t allowed, but not that strict during the time of the Judges.... ANOTHER PROVIDENCE?? Boaz is clearly intersted in Ruth, ordering his men to go beyond the law and actually leave food for her
  10. Estimated to be about 29-50lbs of grain (1-2lbs a day was pay to workers) Shows Boaz’s favor combined with her hard word Would have been enough for Naomi and Ruth for weeks
  11. Favor comes, but even if it doesn’t, refuge is found with God We don’t seek God to get favor, that’s evil We seek God, and when favored, we know where it comes from
  12. God will pour his grace on any who humble themselves and take refuge under his wings In light of grace, we are compelled to do the work of God
  13. God will pour his grace on any who humble themselves and take refuge under his wings In light of grace, we are compelled to do the work of God
  14. These all tap into the heart of service and blessing others, but they aren’t rooted in the gospel Just helping with out the gospel is nice, but not truly life changing, or eternal. As possessors of the truth, WE should be leading the charge
  15. These all tap into the heart of service and blessing others, but they aren’t rooted in the gospel Just helping with out the gospel is nice, but not truly life changing, or eternal. As possessors of the truth, WE should be leading the charge

  18. All the Pharisees had to do was to take refuge under the wings of Jesus. Stop justifying themselves. Stop relying on themselves. Stop glorifying themselves. But they would not. Ruth was not their model. No falling on their face before Jesus. No bowing down. No astonishment at grace. Don't be like the Pharisees. Be like Ruth.
