- Introduction: Hello, my name is Mary Harris and I am a library graduate student at Old Dominion University. I am in my last year and will be done in May. This session was created in order to provide the knowledge and skills about free Web 2.0 tools that are available to you. This presentation will encompass five web based tools including not only their functionality, but their limitations as well. In addition, curriculum connections will be made throughout with each tool targeting specific grade levels and SOL’s. (5-6 Minutes)
- This tool is an easy way to create videos using pictures, text, and sound. It could be used as a project or a tool in the computer lab in middle school as evidenced in SOL C/T 6-8.2 Identify and use available technologies to complete specific tasks. A. Identify the specific uses for various types of technology and digital resources.It could be used for a book report for an English class. In addition, it could be used in history to describe a battle in a specific war such as Bull Run in the Civil War.The functionality of using Animoto is two-fold. It is easy to use and easily shared for a classroom presentation. In addition, if your school has Ipads for the classroom you could have this app downloaded and the students could begin using it right away. Some of the drawbacks are with the free version you only have a certain selection of music to choose from, it only allows a certain quality of video, and you would receive commercial licensing. (10 minutes plus showing the website)

- Infographics are a tool used to convey a message or multiple messages usually through graphics that convey information like a graph, chart, or map. Easel.ly is a free online tool to help you create your own Infographics to use in lectures. You may also have students create an infographic for a 7th grade science project describing the classification of living things. This covers SOL LS.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning, logic, and the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations in which b) a classification system is developed based on multiple attributes. Students could develop an infographic for health class to describe healthy eating skills. (10 Minutes)
- This is an example of an infographic I created using Easel.ly. Easel.ly can also be utilized for a history project. Students could create an infographic on the key roles of members during the Civil War. This covers SOL USI.9 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the causes, major events, and effects of the Civil War by d) describing the roles of Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, and Frederick Douglass in events leading to and during the war.Features include: The website provides templates for you to choose from. It is easy to sign up and choose either a blank template or one of the many provided on the website.Drawbacks: Easely.ly does not give you directions are how to create an infographic other than a video tutorial. As a teacher you would have to explain to students how to use it. Even then it may be difficult because it took me twenty minutes to figure out how to use it. (10 Minutes)
- Digital Storytelling is a great tool to create presentations in the classroom as a teacher or a students. The tool I chose to explain digital storytelling is simplebooklet. It is a creative way to add images and text and make it into a seamless presentation other educators and students will love. You again start with a blank canvas and add material to each page. The arrow at the top right corner allows you to click it to move to the next page. Several curriculum connections you could create are making a book report on The Giver in 7th grade. This covers SOL 4.8 The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraphing. A second curriculum connection would be to have students create a booklet on the scientific process. A third connection could be to have students create a project about the life of a President. A feature of this tool is ease of access. You can also share, embed, post, and e-mail it to yourself. You have the ability to keep the book within the size of what you are doing. For example, if you are using PowerPoint the booklet will stay the same size if you want to use it for marketing it will be sized for that. Limitations: it seems focused on marketing so if you were a small business it would be great for you. It is tailored to generate and follow leads for you. (10 Minutes)
- Wordle is a creative tool where you can pick a quote or a poem and then make a cloud or in my instance I created a tree. I chose my favorite poem “Birches” by Robert Frost and chose a tree to frame my cloud. You can pick from a multitude of different shapes. A curriculum connection could be used in English. A student could write a poem or use part of a paragraph from a paper and create a word cloud. This would cover SOL 7.3 The student will understand the elements of media literacy. c) Describe how word choice and visual images convey a viewpoint. A second curriculum connection would be for students in science they could create a project on a frog and then create a word cloud in the shape of a frog. A third curriculum connection is you could have second grader’s read a book and then pick out twenty words from their book and create a word cloud and a picture to go along with the book. Features: It is simple to use. There are a plethora of picture outlines to choose from. It can be shared and downloaded very easily. Limitations: If you do not have your Java updated it will not work. Other than that there are not very many downfalls to using this free tool. (8 Minutes)
