2. The Green Bush Hotel Welcome to the historic Bush Hotel which is one of the oldest in Ireland. The Hotel started its life as an Inn and Resting Post for tired travellers and their weary horses on the old Bianconi Stage Coach route between Dublin and the Northwest.

5. The Green Bush Hotel …… .1912 Guest bedrooms were dimly lit by gas lamps (the original gas pipe lines still exist). Heat and hot water came from local fire wood and low grade coal from the adjacent Arigna Mountains (15km from the Hotel). Each bedroom had its own fireplace (such as the beautiful fireplace from Room One now restored in the visitors lounge). Guest bathrooms were shared (c 2. per corridor) and a hot bath was pre booked and filled by the night porter but at an additional cost 2 (old) pence in 1918! In modern terms the Hotel was quite simply self sufficient and environmentally self sustaining with a very low carbon footprint indeed. Needless to say the Innkeepers of the time were unlikely aware of their excellence in environmental sustainability!

6. The Green Bush Hotel Today the strong tradition of inn keeping and guest comfort continues but so also does our environmental responsibility which is one of the core values we also share from the past and this we regard with no less importance than any of our other business activities 2009

9. The Green Bush Hotel WASTE We minimize incoming waste potential though our purchasing policy and supplier relationships using local produce with as little waste packaging as possible. Guests will notice we have eliminated individually packaged toiletries in bedrooms. We do not use foiled minipads of butter or individually portioned cereals, preservatives, sauces, sugars etc. We recover 82% of our cooking oil for recycling. We meticulously hand sort all our recyclables for collection by specialist contractors and ensure that only the bare minimum waste goes to landfill. We now reuse or recycle 100% of all glass We continuously monitor and measure our output and performance.

The Green Bush Hotel We source fresh locally produced foods under the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Scheme with full traceability from farm to fork Michael Gannon & Sons (poultry) are located at Tullyeague, Carrick on Shannon which is located approx 3 km from the Bush Hotel. More Choice Ltd (pork & bacon) are located at Curclare, Carrick on Shannon approximately 6 km from the Bush Hotel.

14. Recycling Building Materials Bush Court (adjacent to Bush Hotel) : these buildings have been constructed largely using recycled building materials: Roof… Windows…. Floors…… Fascia/Soffet….. Guttering…. Floors….. Lighting…etc

16. The Green Bush Hotel We also operate a ‘ facilities management’ initiative whereby every piece of plant, plumbing and machinery at the Hotel is regularly inspected, assessed and documented to ensure optimum efficiency at all times

The Green Bush Hotel ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS We promote environmental awareness to our employees with mandatory training, environmental committees, staff incentives, in house signage and employee environmental notice boards etc. Many employees bring their household refuse to the Hotel for recycling. With our suppliers we have an agreed environmental code of practice relating to timing, frequency of deliveries, packaging used etc. Many of our suppliers take back their packaging from the Bush hotel. We refuse to accept pallets, bubble wrap, shrink wrap, polystyrene etc.
