In the Spring Semester the Interior Design Sophomore Studio , College of Human Ecology , East Carolina University took on the challenge of designing houses that are sustainable and more varied than plans that might have been generated to date. This is in keeping with the University's committment to be a leader in engaged scholarship as well as community service. The students were excited that their work would be put to use. So what we offer here are 18 new plans for Habitat Houses that can be used by anyone who might profit from the student work.
Each house has an imaginary family that the student designers kept in mind in view of the design profession that they will soon join is a service profession: there will be clients for all of the projects that these students will design as practicing interior designers. While these families are fictional , essentially placemarkers in the process of learning to design for others you are welcome to substitute your family, friends or members of the community for the prototype client and use the organizational or program drawings, the plans, elevations and sections and scchedules to extend the student work. We are at the end of our semester so we dedicate our efforts to your use.

3. Habitat Family- Diary 1
• Family of 4- Mother, Father, 2 young children
(ages 4 and 6)
• Father was residential construction manager
and lost his job 3 years ago
• Savings dwindled down- no longer able to
afford their house
• Moved into an apartment that was too small
for family of four
• Applied for Habitat for Humanity house and
got accepted
5. Diary 2
• Child broke their leg and is now
has to use a wheel chair.
• New house needs to
accommodate child’s wheel
chair needs with hallways and
door ways to comfortably fit the
wheel chair
• ramp for entering and exiting
6. Program Statement
• Facts: This family of four just got accepted for a
Habitat for Humanity house.
• Child is recently wheel chair bound
• Needs: They need enough room to comfortably
fit four people.
• The children and parents each need separate
bedrooms and bathrooms
• House needs to include
kitchen, dining, living, laundry and utility
• Needs to have a wheelchair ramp as well as
hallways and doorways to fit wheelchair
7. Diary 3
• After meeting with the clients, the wife
mentioned she wanted an open floor plan.
She came up with the idea as a river for an
inspiration for the design of the house. She
also wanted the relaxing colors of nature to be
used.
8. Design Concept
• Flowing River
• Just as rivers flow smoothly from one place to
another, my floor plan comfortably flows. As you
first walk into the space, the living, kitchen, and
dining room have an open floor plan, and to the
right of all this is a hallway which connects or
“flows” all of the other rooms
(bedrooms, bathroom, and laundry).
• Rivers contain natural colors of blue, green and
tans. This color palate is what my house will
consist of.
