In the Spring Semester the Interior Design Sophomore Studio , College of Human Ecology , East Carolina University took on the challenge of designing houses that are sustainable and more varied than plans that might have been generated to date. This is in keeping with the University's committment to be a leader in engaged scholarship as well as community service. The students were excited that their work would be put to use. So what we offer here are 18 new plans for Habitat Houses that can be used by anyone who might profit from the student work. Each house has an imaginary family that the student designers kept in mind in view of the design profession that they will soon join is a service profession: there will be clients for all of the projects that these students will design as practicing interior designers. While these families are fictional , essentially placemarkers in the process of learning to design for others you are welcome to substitute your family, friends or members of the community for the prototype client and use the organizational or program drawings, the plans, elevations and sections and scchedules to extend the student work. Program Statement:
 The Habitat for Humanity project is based on the Jefferson Family.
Based on the background of the family and their living circumstances,
Tom and Brady will need specific needs and wants for their new home.

Meet the Jefferson's:
 Habitat for Humanity has saved mourning Jefferson family from the
loss of their loving mother and wife. Beth Jefferson was a 27-year
old woman fighting for her country over in Afghanistan. Due to a gun
misfire she was tragically killed overseas leaving her husband Tom and
their 4- year old son Brady without a wife and mother. Beth was the
primary breadwinner for the Jefferson household so her death not
only devastated the family; it also devastated their finances.
 Prior to Beth’s death, the Jefferson’s lived on base in Jacksonville,
North Carolina. They weren’t the nicest homes but it provided a roof
over their heads with expenses already paid for. The single parent
income was still not enough for the Jefferson’s to afford daycare for
Brady; therefore Tom became a stay-at home dad.
 Tom and Brady are slowly adjusting to the loss of their loving Beth but
its taking time and help from Habitat for Humanity. With Tom’s free
time, him and other Habitat volunteers helped provide them with a
new start and a roof over their head.

Needs & Wants:
The 3- bedroom house is a cozy one-story that can accommodate all of Tom
and Brady’s wants and needs.
 Since it’s only the two of them, one of the bedrooms will be used as Tom’s
office to find work. It will also be used for the part-time Internet jobs Tom
finds time-to-time to help pay the bills. The office will also allow Tom to
stay home with Brady until he enters Kindergarten. The office is located
directly next to Brady’s room so it’s easy access to reach Brady if needed.
 The house includes a front porch and eventually a spacious back patio
where Tom and Brady can enjoy the outdoors. Tom finds the sunshine and
outdoors healing so he was sure to include windows in almost every room
allowing lots natural light in. The back patio Tom plans to build will be his
area of relaxation and a place to reflect on his new life.
 The kitchen is spacious and open to both the dining room and living room
so Tom is able to keep an eye on Brady while preparing their meals. The
kitchen also includes a sit down bar, which ads extra counter space and
another seating area for the two.

Journal Entries
Dear Journal,
 Brady started back to preschool today for the first time since Beth’s accident. He seemed to be fairly upbeat so maybe getting
back into a routine will help not remind him of what happened. It sure isn’t helping me, but nothing seems to these days. I’m
trying to put on a happy face for my son but it’s still a struggle. I am hoping building this house will be a distraction from the
mourning of the love of my life.
Dear Journal,
 Habitat for Humanity signed off on the finalized house plans last week, which is a huge step forward. I wish so badly Beth was
here to tell me how the kitchen should be laid out, and how big the living room should be, etc., etc. She was always so good at
that sort of stuff. We have been living with my sister the past month so I’m sure moving into this house will be a huge relief. She
has been so helpful and supportive to Brady and I with adjusting to everything, but I’m sure also a burden for her as well.
Hopefully this new house will allow a fresh start for our family.
Dear Journal,
 We begin the building process next week, which is extremely exciting. I need something to fill my days while Brady is at
Preschool. Brady seems just as excited to be able to have his own bedroom. I designed the house to be a fairly open floor plan
since it’s only me watching Brady. In our previous house on the Base every room was divided by walls not leaving much open
room and making the house feel smaller then it was. It was also difficult to get things done around the house with Brady home
because I wasn’t able to keep an eye out for him at all times. I also added a third bedroom for my office. That will be helpful
for the job hunting as well as the part time work I’m able to find online. One of my favorite parts about the house is the large
front and back porch. That will be perfect in the spring and summer time so Brady and I can play ball or ride his bike in the
street while I watch him from the porch. Well I’m exhausted and must be up early to get some of the materials for the house
tomorrow but I will update you soon on the house building.

Dear Journal,
 This past week has been a busy one. Monday – Wednesday we
began laying the platform of our house. It’s exciting to finally start the
process after all the planning we’ve done. The Habitat designers and I
came to a conclusion that it would utilize the space better moving the
laundry room and water heater into a closet in the hallway. With the
laundry room away from the kitchen, we are able to put in a walk in
pantry and extend the counterpace a few feet.

What are solar panels?
 Solar energy is one of the most bountiful sources of
energy on our planet. It is also considered one of
the most clean sources of energy available.
 As of now, the number one way to collect light and
turn it into energy is know as “solar panels.” Solar
panels come in a variety of types and sizes and are
used as the power solution for both residential and
commercial solar power systems.
Solar panels create electricity
by converting sunlight into
energy.
 Many people are now lighting up their yard or
landscaping with solar-powered garden lights. And
perhaps you've seen traffic control signage and
lighting powered by solar panels.

Design Concept:
 Tom and Beth Jefferson spent a memorable
week in the Grand Canyon after they tied the
knot. It was one of the most exciting, relaxing,
romantic weeks of their lives. Mainly because
they got to enjoy the beautiful scenery but also
because it was just the two of them. Tom has
very fond memories of the honeymoon and
wants it to be the main concept for his new home.
Even though Tom is doing his best to accept the
reality of Beth no longer alive, he wants this
fresh start to be dedicated to her.
 The furniture is boxy and masculine much like
the shapes of the canyons. It also suits the needs
of both Tom and Brady. Since Beth is no longer
there, there is no need to add feminine touches
with the exception of a few memorabilia’s of
her. The colors are warm and inviting which will
feel comforting for Tom and Brady without the
comfort of their wife and mother. The rich color
scheme is a reminder of the Arizona desert
sunset that Tom and Beth once enjoyed so much
on their honeymoon.
