5. Rules
. When a player is running with the ball they must
do what is known as a running bounce every 15
metres. If the player does not, the umpire decides
to give a free kick to the other team.
. One of the biggest AFL rules is holding the ball
which helps stop players from purposely slowing
down the play. This happens when a player is
tackled and they must get rid of the ball by kicking
it or handballing it.
. When handballing, the ball it must be punched
with one hand with the other fist, it can not to be
punched like a volleyball serve. The ball is not
allowed to be handed to another teammate. Also the
ball can’t be thrown to another player.
. In Aussie rules there isn’t an offside rule, that
means all 18 players on both teams are allowed
anywhere on the oval at any time in the match.

23. Goal Umpires
A goal umpire is an
umpire that stands at the
goals. The first signal they
use when a goal is kicked
through the two middle
posts is with your pointer
fingers towards pointing
the umpire in a gun like
fashion They will then
wave two white flags in a
special criss –cross way.
They wave one white flag
if it is a point and use one
finger pointing to signal
the umpire as well.
24. Field Umpires
Field Umpires are the
ones that run around on
the field. They bounce
the ball at the beginning
of the game and after a
goal is scored. They also
can give free kicks when
the players do not follow
the rules.
25. Boundary Umpires
Boundary umpires are
the ones that run along
the boundary of the
field. They will whistle
when the ball is out of
bounds. They then will
throw the ball back on
to the field. This is done
with the boundary
umpires back facing the
field and the two ruck
man will then compete
for the ball.
