Accelerating the research
Process by the use of ATLAS.ti
By Siti Rokiah Siwok

2. Overview
• The common challenges during three
main stages of a research process:
– literature review
– data analysis
– reporting
• How ATLAS.ti accelerates the process at
the three stages.
• Conclusion
2
3. At the beginning….
• “Once upon a research”…….
• Among the feelings that we may have on
embarking our research project,
especially for novice researchers are :
excitement, anxiousness, “ambitious to
change the world”, overwhelmed,
confuse etc….or may be summed as a
generic term call “worry” and “stress”.

4. Pre Literature Stage
• This, I called the “Pre literature Review
Stage”…and ATLAS.ti can be of great help
even at this stage
• As thinking and writing are two activities
closely linked together, writing our
thoughts clarifies our thinking.
• At this stage, using the memo is very
useful.
4
5. Then you found a topic…..
• A tentative topic would do.
• For example :
“Helping Parent of Children with Hearing Loss”
5
6. Literature Review
• Then we go on and start on a journey
called “literature review”
• Again, there are a lot of challenges;
overwhelmed by the massive amount of
articles …everything seems important…
we seem to be voracious for the articles
that appear one after another……
• We have to make the decision, and
ATLAS.ti helps to manage our documents
6
7. Data Analysis
• Similarly during data analysis when
everything seem to be “data”, ATLAS.ti
helps to manage the massive amount of
data and quickens the process of making
sense of the data
• Coding is of course the most basic action
in qualitative data analysis.
• The thinking process stays with us, the
researcher; and ATLAS.ti helps.
7
8. Reporting
• What I mean by reporting here can be
any kind of efforts to write the results of
the analysis.
• It can be writing the result of the analysis
as part of a thesis or writing a journal
article or writing a book.
• Here is an example of an article in the
process of writing.
8
9. Conclusion
• A research is a challenging journey and
the process can take a toll on the self of
the researcher
• With its user friendly features, ATLAS.ti
relieves much of the stress in doing
research and thus accelerates the
process.
• Thank you very much
