DELUSIONS

NARRATIVE
The opening scene shows two students discussing their work and the girl explaining how tired she is.
They leave the building and go home in different directions. As she walks to the car park, she senses
someone is following her and keeps looking behind. The audience can see the image of a ‘ugly
monster’ but at this point she doesn’t see it. She uses the lift to the car park and as she leaves, she is
horrified by the sight of the ‘monster’ which suddenly appears before her. She runs to the car and in a
state of panic, she puts the key in the ignition. Looking around she calms a little as she realises there
is nothing there and she was imagining it. As she looks behind, the ‘monster’ appears in the car,
trying to kill her. The final scene shows the male student trying to wake up the female student and
continue revising.
PROPS AND COSTUME
MAKE-UP
Both characters are dressed in typical student type clothes – casual / comfortable clothes. The girl
wears glasses possibly to show how smart and motivated she is. The make-up is very natural maybe
to show the contrast between her and the ‘monster’. The ‘monster’ is also wearing casual clothes
which is odd but the make-up is extremely vivid and grotesque. It has zombie like eyes, lips ripped off,
purple crusty make-up and its ear has been bitten off.
The props they used are:
• University equipment, e.g. files, pens, bags, bottle of water
• Mobile phone
• Car
SETTINGS
There are different settings used in this film:
• Library
• Car park
• Lift
• The path through a park.
SOUNDS
Background traffic noises as she walks down the path and there is a regular chirping sound of crickets,
both of which are fairly normal sounds. However each time the monsters appear, there is a loud
crashing noise. As she senses something is not right, the music builds up and then becomes more
screechy and loud. Then the phone bleeps, immediately followed by a sudden loud crash of cymbals.
This makes the viewer very jumpy and nervous and anticipates trouble. There is a contrast between
the normal sounds of the lift, traffic, etc… with the sudden loud crashing when the monster appears.
In the lift scene, the cymbals are used to create tension. As the girl runs to the car, the music
becomes more dramatic with drums beating which suggest the girl’s heart is beating fast. The scene
in the car is very tense. The music reflects this leading to a horrible grating noise designed to make
you jump.
LIGHTING
There are no special lighting effects in the library. There is artificial lighting in the lift and the car
park. In the outdoor scene the viewer only see the pavement and either side is in the darkness. This
maybe done to create the tension and fear. The viewer anticipates that something fighting will
happen.
CAMERA WORK
In the opening library scene, long and medium shots are used so that the viewer can see the
characters involved and what they are doing. The use of long shots in the first section of the film
helps to set the scene and focuses on the actions.
Then when the girl is on her own, the camera appears to be following her which gives the impression
that the monster is behind her. This is followed by a rapid close up on her back then her face showing
a puzzled expression.
Shallow depth of field is used when the monster appears in the background as a blurred image.
High angle shot is used is used in the lift to give the idea of CCTV.
As she comes out of the lift, on eye level camera shot is used to make the audience see what the
character sees. This is immediately followed by a close up of the monster.
Long shots are used to show the action in the car park then a low angle shot is used as she gets into
the car. An eye level camera shot is used in the car also.
EDITING
There are many cuts from one character to the other and while she is walking the cuts help to show
the scene from the front, back and side views.
Cuts are used to show two scenes.
Major editing is used to make the monster disappear.
Editing is used to create the effect of a CCTV camera – i.e. putting on date, time and cam 2.
Then in the car scene, there is a rapid sequence of cuts and gaps which create a flashing effect.

She runs to the car and in a state of panic, she puts the key in the ignition. Looking around she calms a little as she realises there is nothing there and she was imagining it. As she looks behind, the ‘monster’ appears in the car, trying to kill her. The final scene shows the male student trying to wake up the female student and continue revising.
  • 3. PROPS AND COSTUME MAKE-UP Both characters are dressed in typical student type clothes – casual / comfortable clothes. The girl wears glasses possibly to show how smart and motivated she is. The make-up is very natural maybe to show the contrast between her and the ‘monster’. The ‘monster’ is also wearing casual clothes which is odd but the make-up is extremely vivid and grotesque. It has zombie like eyes, lips ripped off, purple crusty make-up and its ear has been bitten off. The props they used are: • University equipment, e.g. files, pens, bags, bottle of water • Mobile phone • Car
  • 4. SETTINGS There are different settings used in this film: • Library • Car park • Lift • The path through a park.
  • 5. SOUNDS Background traffic noises as she walks down the path and there is a regular chirping sound of crickets, both of which are fairly normal sounds. However each time the monsters appear, there is a loud crashing noise. As she senses something is not right, the music builds up and then becomes more screechy and loud. Then the phone bleeps, immediately followed by a sudden loud crash of cymbals. This makes the viewer very jumpy and nervous and anticipates trouble. There is a contrast between the normal sounds of the lift, traffic, etc… with the sudden loud crashing when the monster appears. In the lift scene, the cymbals are used to create tension. As the girl runs to the car, the music becomes more dramatic with drums beating which suggest the girl’s heart is beating fast. The scene in the car is very tense. The music reflects this leading to a horrible grating noise designed to make you jump.
  • 6. LIGHTING There are no special lighting effects in the library. There is artificial lighting in the lift and the car park. In the outdoor scene the viewer only see the pavement and either side is in the darkness. This maybe done to create the tension and fear. The viewer anticipates that something fighting will happen.
  • 7. CAMERA WORK In the opening library scene, long and medium shots are used so that the viewer can see the characters involved and what they are doing. The use of long shots in the first section of the film helps to set the scene and focuses on the actions. Then when the girl is on her own, the camera appears to be following her which gives the impression that the monster is behind her. This is followed by a rapid close up on her back then her face showing a puzzled expression. Shallow depth of field is used when the monster appears in the background as a blurred image. High angle shot is used is used in the lift to give the idea of CCTV. As she comes out of the lift, on eye level camera shot is used to make the audience see what the character sees. This is immediately followed by a close up of the monster. Long shots are used to show the action in the car park then a low angle shot is used as she gets into the car. An eye level camera shot is used in the car also.
  • 8. EDITING There are many cuts from one character to the other and while she is walking the cuts help to show the scene from the front, back and side views. Cuts are used to show two scenes. Major editing is used to make the monster disappear. Editing is used to create the effect of a CCTV camera – i.e. putting on date, time and cam 2. Then in the car scene, there is a rapid sequence of cuts and gaps which create a flashing effect.
