Brookdale Community College Webmaster Certification Program Syllabus (Spring 1999)

Brookdale Community College
Community Development
Webmaster Certification Course
Spring Semester 1999

Syllabus

Course Overview
As a Webmaster you will wear many hats. HTML Author and Designer, Systems
Administrator and Applications Developer -- these are just some of the roles you
may be called upon to play in your organization. This 90 hour webmaster
certification course is designed to expose you to these three basic functional areas,
enabling you to function as Webmaster in a variety of environments and
organizational settings. Classroom instruction will include, but will not be limited to,
the following topics: HTML and Web Design; Web Management With Microsoft
FrontPage; Windows and UNIX Web Server Installation, Configuration and
Management; Client and Server-Side Web Programming; Web Databases and
Transaction Processing. As part of this course, students will design and deploy an
actual Web Site for the Jersey Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Class Schedule
This course consists of thirty sessions, each of which will last three hours. The class sessions are scheduled for Thursday evenings, 6:30-9:30pm, Feb 18-May 27 and
Saturday mornings, 9am-noon, February 20-May 29, 1999. These sessions will consist of approximately 50 minutes of lecture interspersed with 25 minutes of
demonstrations. We will take a 15 minute break half way through the class and then return to spend an hour on Lab exercises. The session will conclude with the

instructor's wrap-up and Question and Answer session for the final half hour. We will begin in February by covering the Webmaster's role as HTML author and designer.
As move from February to May, the complexity of the tasks we will tackle together will increase from coding simple HTML to developing basic transaction processing
solutions for your organization. In March, we will cover the basics of Web systems administration, allowing students to gain practical experience setting up and running
Web servers in both MS Windows and UNIX environments. Web programming topics, in particular JavaScript and CGI, will be our focus in April. We will conclude or
course in May with a consideration of advanced topics in Web systems administration. At each level we will add additional components to the class project site. Along the
way we will take field trips to Web sites with relevant information, thereby broadening our exposure to the wealth of webmaster resources available on the Internet.

Prerequisites
Experience with a PC, familiarity with a Web browser and a strong desire to learn.
Students must have access to a PC with access to the Internet and a current
version of either the Netscape Communicator Browser or Microsoft Internet
Explorer.

Required Textbooks
WebMaster in a Nutshell, Deluxe Edition, Apache: The Definitive Guide and
Mastering Internet Information Server 4.0 are the three required texts for this course
(Web Security and Commerce is suggested reading, but not required). The three
required texts will be available through the Brookdale Bookstore and can also be
purchased directly from Amazon.com and other online retailers. Note that Apache:
The Definitive Guide is scheduled for publication in February 1999, so you will have
to wait a couple of weeks to buy it. We will not use it in the class until later in the
semester, so there shouldn't be an issue with obtaining it before we will use it.

Along the way we will take field trips to Web sites with relevant information, thereby broadening our exposure to the wealth of webmaster resources available on the Internet. Prerequisites Experience with a PC, familiarity with a Web browser and a strong desire to learn. Students must have access to a PC with access to the Internet and a current version of either the Netscape Communicator Browser or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Required Textbooks WebMaster in a Nutshell, Deluxe Edition, Apache: The Definitive Guide and Mastering Internet Information Server 4.0 are the three required texts for this course (Web Security and Commerce is suggested reading, but not required). The three required texts will be available through the Brookdale Bookstore and can also be purchased directly from Amazon.com and other online retailers. Note that Apache: The Definitive Guide is scheduled for publication in February 1999, so you will have to wait a couple of weeks to buy it. We will not use it in the class until later in the semester, so there shouldn't be an issue with obtaining it before we will use it.
