A Day in the Navy

•   On June 21, 327,538 active duty officers, Sailors and midshipmen; 65,117 selected Reserve Sailors,
    with 5,257 mobilized Reserves; and 204,044 civilians are serving in the Department of the Navy.

•   There are 285 active ships in service; 142 (50 percent) ships, including four aircraft carriers and two
    large-deck amphibious ships, and 27 (50 percent) submarines are underway away from homeport.

•   There are 8,817 individual augmentees, 4,604 of whom are mobilized Reserves, deployed on the
    ground around the world in support of overseas contingency operations.

•   The Navy’s oldest aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN 65), passes the Navy’s newest aircraft
    carrier, USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), during a transit of the Bab el Mandeb Strait as Enterprise
    begins its transit home from a deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR) and
    George H.W. Bush enters the AOR on a scheduled deployment to conduct maritime security
    operations.

•   Los Angeles-class submarine USS Bremerton (SSN 698) moors alongside submarine tender USS
    Emory S. Land (AS 39) during a scheduled port visit and maintenance period in Mina Salmon,
    Bahrain.

•   The Ronald Reagan Strike Group completes 26 sorties while operating in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR in
    support of U.S. and coalition forces on the ground in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring
    Freedom.

•   A Reserve component officer from Program Executive Officer (PEO) Tactical Aircraft Programs
    leads a 28-person Naval Air Systems Unmanned Arial Vehicle (UAV) Detachment that is operating
    three MQ-8B Fire Scout UAVs with two Ground Control Stations to provide reconnaissance,
    situational awareness and targeting support for U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan.

•   Members of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1, currently deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, as
    part of Task Force Overlord, conduct a weapons training exercise.

•   Sailors from guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87), assigned to Combined Task Force 151,
    a multinational, mission-based task force conducting counter-piracy operations in the Southern Red
    Sea, Gulf of Aden, Somali Basin and Arabian Sea, participate in search and rescue swimmer training
    in the Gulf of Aden.

•   Los Angeles-class submarine USS Columbia (SSN 771) departs Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for
    a scheduled six-month deployment to the western Pacific, while USS Maine (SSBN 741) (Blue Crew)
    and USS Pasadena (SSN 752) prepare to return home following their deployment.

•   Mine countermeasures ship USS Defender (MCM 2) conducts Unit Level Training Assessment -
    Engineering certifications in the western Pacific.

•   In keeping with ongoing regional engagements in the western Pacific, Chief of Naval Operations
    Adm. Gary Roughead says, "Our commitment to the Pacific, to Asia and the Indian Ocean, Arabian
Gulf region, is unquestioned. The presence that we enjoy in the western Pacific is greatly facilitated
    by the fact that we have a forward deployed force there: a nuclear aircraft carrier, ships that are part
    of that force, an amphibious ready group and, of course, the Marines are forward in Okinawa. We
    have submarines in Guam, home-ported forward in Guam. And so that force structure, I believe, is
    key to the safety, the security and the stability of Asia.”

•   The Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729) is in port Diego Garcia, while
    USS Michigan (SSGN 727) is in port Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Wash., following a 13-month
    forward deployment to Guam.

•   Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and U.S. Navy midshipmen participating in a midshipmen
    exchange program listen to Vice Adm. Scott R. Van Buskirk, U.S. 7th Fleet commander, deliver
    remarks at a reception in Yokosuka, Japan.

•   USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and Military Sealift Command (MSC) ships USNS Pecos (T-AO 197)
    and USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50) participate in the annual Southeast Asia Cooperation and Training
    exercise.

•   MH-60S Seahawks from Helicopter Sea Control Squadron 25’s “Island Knights” embark aboard USS
    Essex (LHD 2) in preparation for the ship’s next underway period.

•   The Pacific Partnership 2011 team, including USS Cleveland (LPD 7), is in Dili, Timor-Leste, for the
    fourth phase of its humanitarian civic assistance mission.

•   Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 5, deployed aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73),
    participates in a small weapons exercise aboard the Royal Australian frigate HMAS Darwin (FFG
    04).

•   The International Hydrographic Organization celebrates World Hydrography Day as two naval
    oceanographic survey ships conduct hydrographic missions and Commander, Naval Meteorology and
    Oceanography Command hosts a reception aboard USNS Bowditch (T-AGS 62) in Da Nang,
    Vietnam, following hydrographic surveys supporting the Joint Prisoners of War, Missing in Action
    Accounting Command.

•   More than 100 Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps midshipmen from various colleges and
    universities, including Harvard University, participate in Naval Aviation Day aboard Naval Air
    Station North Island, Calif., as part of their Career Orientation and Training for Midshipmen. USS
    Peleliu (LHA 5), USS New Orleans (LPD 18) and USS Sampson (DDG 102) also host training for
    the midshipmen.

•   USS Chafee (DDG 90) and USS Lake Erie (CG 70) participate in exercise Northern Edge, an exercise
    focused on air tactics that involves more than 150 Air Force, Navy, Air National Guard, Marine and
    Army aircraft, in the Gulf of Alaska.

•   USS Oak Hill (LSD 51) Sailors visit Boothbay, Maine, in conjunction with the Windjammer Festival.

•   USS Scranton (SSN 756), USS Newport News (SSN 750) and USS Dallas (SSN 700) conduct
    maritime security operations in the European Command AOR, while USS Miami (SSN 755), USS
    Springfield (SSN 761) and USS Boise (SSN 764) conduct operations in the western Atlantic.
•   Sailors from France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the U.S. conduct firefighting, damage control
    and helicopter familiarization training as part of the in-port phase of FRUKUS 2011, a two-week
    invitational exercise building operational and tactical interoperability among participating naval
    forces.

•   Divers aboard USNS Grapple (T-ARS 53) continue dive familiarization training with Azerbaijan,
    Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania and Ukraine during Eurasia Partnership Dive 2011 in Constanta,
    Romania.

•   Africa Partnership Station's (APS) medical team training concludes, completing the APS Cameroon
    hub.

•   The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) and USS
    Whidbey Island (LSD 41), from the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, conduct amphibious
    operations while participating in the bilateral Spanish Amphibious Landing Exercise off the coast of
    Spain.

•   USS Boone (FFG 28) and USS Thach (FFG 43), deployed in support of Southern Seas 2011,
    participate in anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare exercises with Chilean navy submarine
    Carrera (SS-22) and Chilean navy ships CNS Condell (FF 06) and CNS Blanco (FF 15) near
    Valparaiso, Chile.

•   Navy divers from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2, Armada de Chile and the Chilean Special
    Forces participate in the Southern Partnership Station opening ceremony for navy divers in
    Valparaiso, Chile.

•   Reserve component Sailors from various units provide medical and dental care to patients on board
    MSC hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) and at two medical sites in the vicinity of San Juan del
    Sur, Nicaragua, in support of Continuing Promise 2011, a five-month humanitarian and civic
    assistance mission to the Caribbean, Central and South America.

•   Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona enters into a groundbreaking agreement with the Coast Guard
    Acquisition Directorate, establishing the first-ever partnership that enables the Navy to provide
    performance assessment capability to the Coast Guard, as it moves its largest and most
    technologically advanced National Security Cutter class through combat systems ship qualification
    trials.

•   The Naval Base San Diego Recycling Center recycle 81,000 pounds of solid waste, including
    construction and demolition debris, diverting it from landfills and saving the Navy $1,726.

•   The new 30,500 square foot Child Development Center on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is 60
    percent complete and has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold status just
    from the design phase of the project.

•   More than 140 Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets are attending the
    annual Area 3 NJROTC Leadership Academy at Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill. The cadets attending
    the weeklong training are from units across eight states that include 55 high schools from Minnesota,
    Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia.
•   USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) is visiting Naval Weapons Station Earle, N.J., for an ordnance offload after
    returning from an eight and a half month deployment.

•   Commander, Navy Region Midwest, Rear Adm. Tilghman D. Payne speaks at the Habitat for
    Humanity community relations event where 24 Sailors partner with civilians to help insulate and
    install drywall in a Rock Island, Ill., home during Quad Cities Navy Week.

•   Capt. Joseph Voboril, commanding officer of Naval Station Newport, R.I., presents the staff of the
    naval station’s Ney Hall Galley with the Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic’s “Five Star”
    Accreditation in Food Service Fiscal Year 2011/2012 plaque serving more than 2,150 meals daily to
    staff/student officers, officer candidates and enlisted personnel.

•   Recruit Division 218 marches to a training evolution at Recruit Training Command, the Navy's only
    boot camp, on Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill.

•   The Commodores jazz ensemble gave a vocal jazz clinic and performed a concert at Hardy Middle
    School in Washington, D.C., as part of the Washington Performing Arts Society's Capitol Jazz and
    String Camp.

•   Alaskan Senators Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich make presentations at the fourth Symposium on
    the Impacts of an Ice-Diminishing Arctic on Naval and Maritime Operations hosted by the U.S.
    Arctic Research Commission and the National/Naval Ice Center.

•   Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Executive Director Brian Persons presents a total
    ownership cost award to Program Executive Office Aircraft Carriers' Carrier Obsolescence
    Management Working Group in a ceremony at NAVSEA headquarters in Washington, D.C.

•   Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School, located at the John C. Stennis Space
    Center, Miss., conducts security force assistance with 73 international military students from 24
    countries.

•   An $8.1 million project at Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston aboard Joint Base Charleston, S.C., is
    unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony. The project included a housing unit, enclosed weight room and
    maintenance building as part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure expansion.

•   Sailors gather at the commissary aboard Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla., for a special "Fit to
    Serve - Fit for Life" buffet lunch featuring salads, fruit and low-fat meats.

•   More than 110 fans post a response to the U.S. Navy’s Facebook page post asking fans, “What did
    you do today?” Michael Ricketts writes, “Wrote tons of reports and did paperwork to ensure my
    Sailors are well taken care of.” Tom Trig adds, “Spoke to an old shipmate today, he went from E-1 to
    commander and will be a captain next year…” George M. Anthony writes, “After 30 years in the
    military…I played golf today with my other retired brothers….Go Navy!!!”

•   Sailors from USS Nimitz (CVN 68), Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and exercise FRUKUS
    explain in videos posted on the U.S. Navy’s You Tube website what they did today in the Navy.

•   Recruiters help 55 people join America's Navy.

A Day in the Navy June 21, 2011 (LINKS ARE TO ASSOCIATED PHOTOS OR ARTICLES) • On June 21, 327,538 active duty officers, Sailors and midshipmen; 65,117 selected Reserve Sailors, with 5,257 mobilized Reserves; and 204,044 civilians are serving in the Department of the Navy. • There are 285 active ships in service; 142 (50 percent) ships, including four aircraft carriers and two large-deck amphibious ships, and 27 (50 percent) submarines are underway away from homeport. • There are 8,817 individual augmentees, 4,604 of whom are mobilized Reserves, deployed on the ground around the world in support of overseas contingency operations. • The Navy’s oldest aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN 65), passes the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), during a transit of the Bab el Mandeb Strait as Enterprise begins its transit home from a deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR) and George H.W. Bush enters the AOR on a scheduled deployment to conduct maritime security operations. • Los Angeles-class submarine USS Bremerton (SSN 698) moors alongside submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) during a scheduled port visit and maintenance period in Mina Salmon, Bahrain. • The Ronald Reagan Strike Group completes 26 sorties while operating in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR in support of U.S. and coalition forces on the ground in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. • A Reserve component officer from Program Executive Officer (PEO) Tactical Aircraft Programs leads a 28-person Naval Air Systems Unmanned Arial Vehicle (UAV) Detachment that is operating three MQ-8B Fire Scout UAVs with two Ground Control Stations to provide reconnaissance, situational awareness and targeting support for U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan. • Members of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1, currently deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, as part of Task Force Overlord, conduct a weapons training exercise. • Sailors from guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87), assigned to Combined Task Force 151, a multinational, mission-based task force conducting counter-piracy operations in the Southern Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Somali Basin and Arabian Sea, participate in search and rescue swimmer training in the Gulf of Aden. • Los Angeles-class submarine USS Columbia (SSN 771) departs Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for a scheduled six-month deployment to the western Pacific, while USS Maine (SSBN 741) (Blue Crew) and USS Pasadena (SSN 752) prepare to return home following their deployment. • Mine countermeasures ship USS Defender (MCM 2) conducts Unit Level Training Assessment - Engineering certifications in the western Pacific. • In keeping with ongoing regional engagements in the western Pacific, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead says, "Our commitment to the Pacific, to Asia and the Indian Ocean, Arabian

The presence that we enjoy in the western Pacific is greatly facilitated by the fact that we have a forward deployed force there: a nuclear aircraft carrier, ships that are part of that force, an amphibious ready group and, of course, the Marines are forward in Okinawa. We have submarines in Guam, home-ported forward in Guam. And so that force structure, I believe, is key to the safety, the security and the stability of Asia.” • The Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729) is in port Diego Garcia, while USS Michigan (SSGN 727) is in port Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Wash., following a 13-month forward deployment to Guam. • Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and U.S. Navy midshipmen participating in a midshipmen exchange program listen to Vice Adm. Scott R. Van Buskirk, U.S. 7th Fleet commander, deliver remarks at a reception in Yokosuka, Japan. • USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and Military Sealift Command (MSC) ships USNS Pecos (T-AO 197) and USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50) participate in the annual Southeast Asia Cooperation and Training exercise. • MH-60S Seahawks from Helicopter Sea Control Squadron 25’s “Island Knights” embark aboard USS Essex (LHD 2) in preparation for the ship’s next underway period. • The Pacific Partnership 2011 team, including USS Cleveland (LPD 7), is in Dili, Timor-Leste, for the fourth phase of its humanitarian civic assistance mission. • Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 5, deployed aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73), participates in a small weapons exercise aboard the Royal Australian frigate HMAS Darwin (FFG 04). • The International Hydrographic Organization celebrates World Hydrography Day as two naval oceanographic survey ships conduct hydrographic missions and Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command hosts a reception aboard USNS Bowditch (T-AGS 62) in Da Nang, Vietnam, following hydrographic surveys supporting the Joint Prisoners of War, Missing in Action Accounting Command. • More than 100 Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps midshipmen from various colleges and universities, including Harvard University, participate in Naval Aviation Day aboard Naval Air Station North Island, Calif., as part of their Career Orientation and Training for Midshipmen. USS Peleliu (LHA 5), USS New Orleans (LPD 18) and USS Sampson (DDG 102) also host training for the midshipmen. • USS Chafee (DDG 90) and USS Lake Erie (CG 70) participate in exercise Northern Edge, an exercise focused on air tactics that involves more than 150 Air Force, Navy, Air National Guard, Marine and Army aircraft, in the Gulf of Alaska. • USS Oak Hill (LSD 51) Sailors visit Boothbay, Maine, in conjunction with the Windjammer Festival. • USS Scranton (SSN 756), USS Newport News (SSN 750) and USS Dallas (SSN 700) conduct maritime security operations in the European Command AOR, while USS Miami (SSN 755), USS Springfield (SSN 761) and USS Boise (SSN 764) conduct operations in the western Atlantic.

Sailors from France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the U.S. conduct firefighting, damage control and helicopter familiarization training as part of the in-port phase of FRUKUS 2011, a two-week invitational exercise building operational and tactical interoperability among participating naval forces. • Divers aboard USNS Grapple (T-ARS 53) continue dive familiarization training with Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania and Ukraine during Eurasia Partnership Dive 2011 in Constanta, Romania. • Africa Partnership Station's (APS) medical team training concludes, completing the APS Cameroon hub. • The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) and USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41), from the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, conduct amphibious operations while participating in the bilateral Spanish Amphibious Landing Exercise off the coast of Spain. • USS Boone (FFG 28) and USS Thach (FFG 43), deployed in support of Southern Seas 2011, participate in anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare exercises with Chilean navy submarine Carrera (SS-22) and Chilean navy ships CNS Condell (FF 06) and CNS Blanco (FF 15) near Valparaiso, Chile. • Navy divers from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2, Armada de Chile and the Chilean Special Forces participate in the Southern Partnership Station opening ceremony for navy divers in Valparaiso, Chile. • Reserve component Sailors from various units provide medical and dental care to patients on board MSC hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) and at two medical sites in the vicinity of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, in support of Continuing Promise 2011, a five-month humanitarian and civic assistance mission to the Caribbean, Central and South America. • Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona enters into a groundbreaking agreement with the Coast Guard Acquisition Directorate, establishing the first-ever partnership that enables the Navy to provide performance assessment capability to the Coast Guard, as it moves its largest and most technologically advanced National Security Cutter class through combat systems ship qualification trials. • The Naval Base San Diego Recycling Center recycle 81,000 pounds of solid waste, including construction and demolition debris, diverting it from landfills and saving the Navy $1,726. • The new 30,500 square foot Child Development Center on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is 60 percent complete and has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold status just from the design phase of the project. • More than 140 Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets are attending the annual Area 3 NJROTC Leadership Academy at Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill. The cadets attending the weeklong training are from units across eight states that include 55 high schools from Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia.

USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) is visiting Naval Weapons Station Earle, N.J., for an ordnance offload after returning from an eight and a half month deployment. • Commander, Navy Region Midwest, Rear Adm. Tilghman D. Payne speaks at the Habitat for Humanity community relations event where 24 Sailors partner with civilians to help insulate and install drywall in a Rock Island, Ill., home during Quad Cities Navy Week. • Capt. Joseph Voboril, commanding officer of Naval Station Newport, R.I., presents the staff of the naval station’s Ney Hall Galley with the Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic’s “Five Star” Accreditation in Food Service Fiscal Year 2011/2012 plaque serving more than 2,150 meals daily to staff/student officers, officer candidates and enlisted personnel. • Recruit Division 218 marches to a training evolution at Recruit Training Command, the Navy's only boot camp, on Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill. • The Commodores jazz ensemble gave a vocal jazz clinic and performed a concert at Hardy Middle School in Washington, D.C., as part of the Washington Performing Arts Society's Capitol Jazz and String Camp. • Alaskan Senators Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich make presentations at the fourth Symposium on the Impacts of an Ice-Diminishing Arctic on Naval and Maritime Operations hosted by the U.S. Arctic Research Commission and the National/Naval Ice Center. • Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Executive Director Brian Persons presents a total ownership cost award to Program Executive Office Aircraft Carriers' Carrier Obsolescence Management Working Group in a ceremony at NAVSEA headquarters in Washington, D.C. • Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School, located at the John C. Stennis Space Center, Miss., conducts security force assistance with 73 international military students from 24 countries. • An $8.1 million project at Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston aboard Joint Base Charleston, S.C., is unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony. The project included a housing unit, enclosed weight room and maintenance building as part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure expansion. • Sailors gather at the commissary aboard Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla., for a special "Fit to Serve - Fit for Life" buffet lunch featuring salads, fruit and low-fat meats. • More than 110 fans post a response to the U.S. Navy’s Facebook page post asking fans, “What did you do today?” Michael Ricketts writes, “Wrote tons of reports and did paperwork to ensure my Sailors are well taken care of.” Tom Trig adds, “Spoke to an old shipmate today, he went from E-1 to commander and will be a captain next year…” George M. Anthony writes, “After 30 years in the military…I played golf today with my other retired brothers….Go Navy!!!” • Sailors from USS Nimitz (CVN 68), Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and exercise FRUKUS explain in videos posted on the U.S. Navy’s You Tube website what they did today in the Navy. • Recruiters help 55 people join America's Navy.
