Teacher as Model

One of the challenges of the Non Fiction Unit in the English 4C course is that our students have more
control and say in their learning, both the content and timing of it.

In this 5 week period there is very little opportunity for the teacher to “instruct” and even less for the
student to “retell or remember” what they were to know.

In order to provide a better sense of control of this “self directed” unit I am going to act as a model
for my students and conduct my own “non fiction novel study.” Each day I will read a small part of my
book, write a 4 Corners connection reading log (in the first 2 weeks of the unit), complete a weekly,
post it in paper form on the “What I am working on” wall, participate in the Thursday assessment
activity and view and reflect on student work that is posted, complete ( in weeks 3 and 4) “topical
reading logs” that will lead ultimately to the Research Process and Project.
